Is The Term "Asian Carp" Offensive To Some People?

Featured Replies

It would seem that there are some folks in the Minnesota Senate think so.

"Asian Carp" Gets A Makeover In Minnesota Senate « CBS Minnesota

"The state Senate on Monday approved a measure that would rename the fish “invasive carp.” It’s a response to concern by some people that the current term casts people from Asian cultures in a negative light."

Good thing they weren't Redskin carp.

It would be funny if it weren't true.

It's sad that there is an actual state legislator that believes this.

For those who aren't familiar, there is currently a plague of 6 or 7 invasive carp species that are literally taking over the river systems of North America. The carp are generally referred to collectively as "Asian carp" because of the fact that the species were all cultivated in China over the last thousand years or so. The fish were intentionally brought into the US in by some people the later 20th century as a means of keeping ponds clean due to their veracious eating habits, but the fish have since made their way into our river systems and are absolutely destroying the habitats and food sources that once belonged to the native fish species of North America.

Do the fish have a spokesperson? Are they offended?

Asian-American Carp sounds a little more PC.

The new Dark Ages. Who will be the Irish monks?

Oh Doc...just like those marauding band of radical Christians roaming the countryside...you slay me.

Sounds like a nuke is the only way to take control of this Asian invasion....

I guess the African Rock Python will be next.

Come on, guru....how could you possibly call it that?

If "Asian" simply refers to these fish being species native to that continent, then this is very stupid.

If "Asian" is a colloquialism meant to signify the fish are invasive or populous, along the lines of how "Indian giver" or getting "Jewed" in a deal rely on ethnic stereotypes, then I could understand.

Stupid. I guess more than half the women in the world are mad about the Largemouth Bass now too.

I think Harry Reid is their spokesman and he refuses to fish for them until the name is changed.
