ESPN's Top 50 Coaches Right Now

I can't wait until that dude turns into a pumpkin. He is a fraud and an all-around bad guy. He is going to make a loud thud when perception is replaced with reality.

Disappointing to hear because he was one guy I always had/have at the top of my "Potential Coaches of UK in the Future" lists.

Isn't his system kind of a gimmicky smoke & mirrors kinda thing?

No doubt. That's why he's got major D-1 programs knocking down his door trying to pry him from little old Belmont....Oh wait.
The best coach's in the nation take mediocre high school talent and win with them.....just as Byrd has done for the last 20 years.....anyone can coach all-americans that are already talent based....big false analogy on these coach's with talent running out of there gym's....lots of coaches doing a better job than the one's being talked about the most on this thread

If Byrd was half the coach you claim him to be, the bigger schools would snatch him up and allow this "elite" coach to take high level talent and win with them.

They are down to Cal & Billy D.

No brainer then. Cal is #1.

I'm sure has turned down many offers from the larger programs in the nation.....just have a whole lot of respect for this guy and what he has accomplished at Belmont over the years

When it comes to X's and O's there would be few coaches that are above Rick Byrd. Ask anyone with any knowledge in the coaching circles and they will tell you that. Some people have no desire to ascend to a perceived level, and I am not sure he has ever had the desire to recruit beyond what he does in the Nashville and southeastern area. There is more to coaching than just being an instructor of the game. Belmont has not been Division 1 very long, they were NAIA and he oversaw that transition. I know he was a co-finalist for the UT job a couple years ago but they went with Martin... also considering he is now in his 60s.

That's great. Really it is, but so what? There's a whole hell of a lot more to being a coach than X's and O's. Tubby Smith is one of the best X's & O's guys around. Doesn't make him the best coach, or anywhere close to it really.

I think when the statement was originally made by another poster about him being the best "coach", the inference was that is was in the X's and O's sense. You disagreed with the statement because he has not gone on to coach at a bigger school. The two don't have to be related. It makes him #37. :D

Yes, at VCU it definitely is. I don't know if he'd play that way if he could have the kind of recruits that he'd be able to get at a high major program though. Maybe so, but I see him as more of a guy who'd probably adjust to what he had than a D'Antoni.

Really good point you make though because I'm usually the anti-thesis of the gimmick, smoke and mirror types.
