May 23, 201412 yr It's called freedom of speech, something you all get on here and mention all the time when defending stuff. Disrespect, how can any military guy respect the President. He never served in any form of military, has the VA scandal going on, cut the military budget to DEATH, fires Generals, lied about Bengazhi, took God out of the military, took credit for killing bin laden when it was the Seals, NSA snooping on people, should I go on. I fully believe you truly understand the Freedom of Speech issue and how it does NOT apply anywhere in this case. If we assume it was directed at Mrs Obama (I do) then it's the same as aiming at the wife of every higher-ranked person that he is. When you're in the military you don't get to to pick and choose which leaders you show respect to. The military would not function if that were the case.
May 23, 201412 yr Well why don't Mrs. Obama get off her butt and take another tax payer funded trip to Africa and hunt those terrorist. Everything the Army Ranger said is true. #send Michelle to do it herself
May 23, 201412 yr Well why don't Mrs. Obama get off her butt and take another tax payer funded trip to Africa and hunt those terrorist. Everything the Army Ranger said is true. #send Michelle to do it herself And there goes any chance of legitimate discussion.
May 23, 201412 yr And there goes any chance of legitimate discussion. Have you not figured me out yet. You want a legit discussion? Yes the Army Ranger was calling Michelle Obama out. Is it his right to do so? I think yes. Does it look good when a person in his role does it, probably not. But still he is right in what he said IMO, there is too much # this and # that. What good is it really doing, I can say it does no good for those poor girls. Great, everyone knows about it, but those girls are still captive and no # is bringing them back. By the way the word hashtag is STUPID and so is the # sign for it. It's the number and pound sign, not a hashtag.
May 23, 201412 yr Well, I agree they should do more, and I'd be completely on board with what you say, except look at the BGP archives and see what the discussions were about Sean Penn's efforts in Haiti, for example. Let's just say, for a Cliff Notes version, a lot of people just want their celebreties to be seen and not heard, and if they put their money where their mouths are, they're accused of being attention hogs. Celebs can't win.The problem with guys like Sean Penn is they do something good like Haiti but then act in a a horrible, deplorable manner on another subject so they come across as a phony.
May 23, 201412 yr Don't understand how this could possibly bother anyone. NOBODY was talking about Boko Haram before this incident with the girls and they've been wreaking havoc in Nigeria for years. Anything that brings attention to the ongoing nightmares across huge swaths of the African continent is a good thing in my book. I'll agree with the notion that internet activism is a lazy form of activism... but it's a start. The news brought it my attention, not social media. Probably true for most that don't get their news from social media. I also find myself in agreement more with the Army Ranger.

May 23, 201412 yr Just don't see how anybody could have a problem with what the First Lady did... Unless you just don't like them, that's fine, own up to it. Other than that, you are just looking for a reason to complain about the Administration.
May 23, 201412 yr The news brought it my attention, not social media. Probably true for most that don't get their news from social media. I also find myself in agreement more with the Army Ranger. I think your assumption about most hearing about it on social media is correct. It's the power of social media and it's why it cannot be discounted or poo-pooed. IMO the Ranger was out of line. He was disrespectful to the wife of the Commander-In-Chief. He doesn't get the value of social media yet he used it to go viral. The public has a right to express themselves. It can have power. We can't always be quiet and assume the govt will act appropriately. Telling the people to be quiet and telling us the govt will handle it is an insult to the public IMO. He simply comes across poorly.

Other than that, you are just looking for a reason to complain about the Administration. Can't speak to the Army Ranger, but like CC mentioned I liked his message as a "in general" statement. The majority of people will change their profile picture on a Disney character for a week to help stop child abuse but how does that help? I question how many people donate to a philanthropy. Everyone on social media loves quotes from Jimmy V's ESPY speech, but how many have actually donated to the foundation. In the end, the more attention is great, but it would be nice if more people followed it up with more than just changing a picture, adding a hashtag, or putting up a video. And I know I'm generalizing.
May 23, 201412 yr In the end, the more attention is great, but be nice if more people followed it up than just changing a picture, adding a hashtag, or putting up a video. How exactly can the public do anything about getting these girls returned other than raise awareness?
May 23, 201412 yr The news brought it my attention, not social media. Probably true for most that don't get their news from social media. I also find myself in agreement more with the Army Ranger. And you are 1,000 percent more informed about what's going on in the world on a day to day basis than the average person, wouldn't you agree? I refuse to accept that anything, even a seemingly pointless internet hashtag, that brings attention to this incident and these people could possibly be a bad thing.
May 23, 201412 yr How exactly can the public do anything about getting these girls returned other than raise awareness? Agreed. The news media will only continue to report on stories that people are interested in. The attention this got in a hurry made it a really big story instead of a blurb in the international bulletins sidebar in the local newspaper. Politicians only act when pressed. The more attention this gets, the better.
May 23, 201412 yr How exactly can the public do anything about getting these girls returned other than raise awareness? I'm just making a general statement, not referring to these girls at all. My last statement that you quoted is more towards the causes that people will support by adding something to their social media account, but not actually doing some good by financially supporting the cause their social media account says they support. In these girls case, seems like raising awareness is all that can be done. In finding a cure for cancer, MS, (or insert many other causes here) there is plenty more. I don't know what it says about me. But this thread is the first I even knew about any kind of situation. I haven't been on social media as much the last week or so and don't watch the news much.

Just my viewpoint, I get that others disagree with me and I'm cool with that. We all have opinions.
