Army Ranger Calls Out The First Lady

Featured Replies

I think your assumption about most hearing about it on social media is correct. It's the power of social media and it's why it cannot be discounted or poo-pooed.

IMO the Ranger was out of line. He was disrespectful to the wife of the Commander-In-Chief. He doesn't get the value of social media yet he used it to go viral. The public has a right to express themselves. It can have power. We can't always be quiet and assume the govt will act appropriately.

Telling the people to be quiet and telling us the govt will handle it is an insult to the public IMO.

He simply comes across poorly.

We'll agree to disagree. I see nothing out of line with what he did. Both what he and the First Lady did comes across as sophomoric to me, but neither were wrong. If you post something on social media in the manner she did, you can expect difference of opinions in a similar fashion and no one should be shocked or offended by it.

In no way do I have a problem with "difference of opinions." None.

My biggest issue is lack of respect by a military member.

That's extremely mild as to what I actually hear some military members say of the President and the First Lady. Was true when Bush was in office as well.
The problem with guys like Sean Penn is they do something good like Haiti but then act in a a horrible, deplorable manner on another subject so they come across as a phony.

OH! You mean like normal, non celebrity people?

The First Lady of the United States using hashtags and social media for such a matter shows weakness.

Normal, non celebrity people don't get recognized for their charity work by the media, so...no. Not alike at all. And Penn is a hypocrite.

Mild? Yes. Still disrespectful.

As the leader of the "We should always refer to the POTUS as 'President' and not just their last name" I agree with your point. My point is that when you're in the military you show respect to ALL members including the President. This gentleman failed to do that. That's my main issue.

Weakness on the part of whom?

I get what you're saying, I just don't see it as all that disrespectful. He has an issue with social media being used as if it's going to get the girls returned, which it isn't. He's pointing out what will. Again, he's right. I mean seriously, how does a pouty face with a sign strike fear (or respect for that matter) in the hearts of a terrorist organization like Boko Haram?

I really don't think this was disrespectful to the First Lady.

Did he give an interview or something where he said his sign was in response to Mrs. Obama's?

I don't believe for a second she was trying to strike fear or respect into the hearts of any organization.

We've seen in this thread that there are people who had no clue of the girls disappearance. What does that tell you? The media is not the source of info these days. She went to the MOST effective medium for raising awareness. Because of that (and the reactions from the right) this has become a widespread story and many more people are aware of it. How is that a bad thing?

By this cat's logic the news should NEVER report of any crime. Why? Just let the police handle it. Why does the public need to know anything? Just let the warriors handle it.

Awareness of any issue is a positive.

I really don't think this was disrespectful to the First Lady.

Again, just look at who people that were offended by this "activism" reacted to? It wasn't Joe or Jane Public. It was Mrs. Obama. She became the face of this particular hashtag.

That's what I'm trying to understand. Did he reply to her tweet with this? Did he "@" her in his tweet? If not, I see it as general statement, and think those trying to connect it as disrespect towards the First Lady are making a gigantic leap, which is not at all shocking.

Couldn't disagree more. I've seen tons of celebrities and famous people tweeting it. Why are we making the leap that his tweet was a direct reaction to her?
