I think he or any other player will look better with the varsity rather than the JV players. And I don't mean to disrespect the JV players, but the level of play and intensity at the varsity level is higher. JV is a place where those players that don't get the chance to perform on Friday nights get to show what they can do. And as they impress you do see them some on Friday nights.

I quess he didn't impress much last year, I don't remember him playing much on fridays.

I dont know if impress would be the right word. I mean who was everyone comparing him to??? Ian. But he will grow, and as he plays full time with the Varsity he will get better and better just as the team will.

By the way, nice to see ya on here Abomb its been a while.

The difference is when some schools legtimately have students move in from out of state or a few hours away, and then you have students who switch schools within the same region without changing residence, and they usually do this at the request of people who would like to see them at their particular school. Im not saying that this hasnt happened at Ashland in the past, because Im sure it has. But what Iam saying is that there have been quite a few players in this area who wanted to come to Ashland recently and they were turned away. But when a kid moves in from out of state what are you supposed to do?? That kid deserves the same opportunity given to every other student-athlete, because their "transfer" was for honest reasons, not solely to play sports. :thumb:

After all this typing, what he is trying to say is "There is no difference!" :D

I know you guys in Ashland are tired of the Ramey Home players every year, but some of these situations are the same!! Whether you would like to agree with it or not. And the big deal here is that your AD has made an absolute mockery of transfers, that now you will have the glowing light on your program if you get a Transfer. I personally dont have a problem with your transfers, get them while you can.:thumb:

The only kid that I can remember that transferred to Boyd without changing house location was the Davis kid from Fairview, quite a few years ago. Other than that your comment consist of kids from other schools. Noteably one from your own, in Thomas and McDavid. The only other ones that come to mind is Vanhoose, and I am sure he would like to transfer again if he could figure out how. The Gillum kid from Greenup definetly got some frequent flyer miles too. Then there were some other players that left Rose Hill to other neighboring schools.

Thanks IronCat, its good to be back!! been busy working and all.:p

I just thank that if we are going to be a running team that we need a sure handed qb and I have heard that this kid might need to mature a little more before he gets the job.

Here's a fun idea for the JC game:

How about we just line up the FB/LB for each team ( Fields Davis and Blake Johnson ) at opposing 45 yd lines and have them go one on one with each other to see who wins? :D

Thats probably what we'll see a whole bunch of ( I HOPE ) in the actual game so we might as well reduce it to the basics, right ? :thumb:

I'd enjoy that about as much as anything else

Cheers, Woody Jr

Sounds like a fine idea to me!:fire:

If memory serves me right, he didn't have much of a chance to impress last year on Friday nights since he was on the depth chart behind Ian Holbrook. I think that is the whole point, some people questioned whether or not he would be able to lead the Cats this fall after his performance with the jv last year.

Darrell will be a fine QB come August, I have no doubt. :thumb:

I agree. :thumb:

If we are going to be a running team I would want Drew McDavid as the QB. On the other hand if we are going to be throwing I would want Drew catching.

I was just going on what you said in your post about a player impressing in a jv game, and by doing so getting more playing time on fridays.:D

Im always for congratulating/promoting kids on their efforts (not JUST achievements). Ive always been a PT Barnum type in that regard. Of course in Ashland thats always served as tweaking our competitors as a side benefit:sssh:

No one has commented on my ? about lift-a-thons, contests, etc. You could also have end of spring practice (or other seasonal period) contests of speed, agility, etc drills. you could reward/acknowledge either overall % improvement or those by position, grade, etc for the team, or even all HS athletes, or even students not currently playing a sport? - that might be a way of allowing a coach to getting someone to particpate?

Just typing as I think (thats why you proibably hear gears grinding loudly:p )

Hey, someone else had a similar idea for off-season conditioning

Coach Brooks in todays Courier-Journal :

The Cats' off-season conditioning program in the past was pretty ordinary. Players lifted weights and ran to get stronger and faster. Strength coach Marc Hill admitted that it could get monotonous doing the same thing day after day.

This winter, though, Brooks worked with Hill to revamp the workouts by dividing players into teams and putting them through some unusual exercises. The idea was that a competition might not only push the players to new limits physically but also enhance their intangible traits.

Ten captains were chosen and they drafted their teams for the competitions, which were held each Wednesday for eight weeks. In one timed relay race, called the "Farmer's Walk," each player had to carry 225 pounds for 100 yards. Another competition called for each player to flip a tractor tire for 25 yards. They pushed vans and played tug of war.

"The exciting thing to me is the leadership that emerged," Brooks said. "We've got a team that's probably going to have only 11 seniors on the roster, so we can't assume the seniors are going to be the leaders. We've got to get it from anywhere we can."

Hill added a responsibility factor to the competition, which was won by Wesley Woodyard's team. Any player who missed an event or showed up late caused his team to be penalized.

"The guys really took ownership in it," said Hill, who was part of a similar off-season regimen at Arizona before he was hired at UK seven years ago. "You had a lot of the guys coming by to see what's next. It was something they could have fun with, and it put the accountability back on the players. That's how you're going to get good."

It’s a mistake to compare Darrell (as a sophomore) to Ian (as a senior). I can remember Ian as a skinny little sophomore with potential, but not very impressive. Nobody believed in him then but his family. Presented with the opportunity; Ian went to work and did what he needed to do – rising to the occasion. I remember Ian’s first varsity start as a junior – he fumbled his first snap. Not a very impressive beginning. But, he got better.

Other young players will rise to the occasion this year. They do every year. This is one of the most exciting aspects of high school football – to see who will step up each year and be the surprises. There are young men on the team right now just waiting for their chance.

Keep working hard,
