Was there any live team scrimmage?

Yes, I believe the team did a live scrimmage towards the end of the practice.

And............

How did they look?

Was this one of the transfers?

Hes the kid we got last year from Greenup County. SO in that respect he is a transfer, not sure how you meant that one Kick.

Was this one of the transfers?

Im pretty sure the person GIAT is talking about is Tremell Young(I believe, not sure about the last name). This is his first practice(ever), he's never played before and is athletic and could end up being a good player in a few years.

This will be Mahan's second full season at Ashland(he transfered here before his soph. year).

And............

How did they look?

They looked very impressive. Mahan was throwing very well and the o-line was looking very good out there.

For a first spring practice I was pretty pleased. :thumb:

Got a comment/question/item for consideration:

Perhaps I'm a little paranoid (no jokes you guys), but aren't we making it too easy for our competition and just providing them the standard or bar to reach when we post our players lifting numbers or other stats on this forum?

It can be used as a motivational tool by other coaches and also gives other teams a handy measuring stick to see how they compare.

I don't mean to have a complete bunker mentality; like coaches who won't let their players participate in weight lifting contests, passing leagues, or discourages them from camps, etc.

Just thought I'd throw it out there to consider. I'm completely in favor of a strong weight program - thats what is needed to get past Rockcastle, Bell, etc (IMHO). Perhaps when our players have excelled someone could post they have a new high & encourage supporters to go by the weight room & see the totals??? UNLESS of course coaches prefer civilians stay away:p

Keep up the good work ..........

Cheers, Woody

Thanks for any consideration, but we at Ashland do not mind, people always throw there best stuff at us.

Whats new?

It was a good first practice. Some notable players were missing due to other spring sports, and the coach allowing the basketball players to take a break. But, this team looks to me to have a lot of potential. There is a very large senior class this year – and that kind of leadership has to be worth something.

Just happy to be there,

NO! Getting these kids great recognition for their hard work is a GREAT thing to put on here! I say post EVERYTHING they do that's impressive...opponent coaches don't really have time to get on here and keep track of this stuff anyway.;)

By the way, our Pikeville kids are doing an okay job I guess...our line's average bench is 150 and their squat is 200. We thought they could use some rest in the off-season so we told them to take every other month off from lifting and getting quicker and faster. Just in case anybody out there wanted to know!:D

OK CoachJ, that’s pretty convoluted sarcasm – so I love it.

IF all of our opponent’s coaches are keeping up with this stuff and are working hard in secret; that is just fine with me. We’ll keep doing our thing.

I believe in recognition and positive reinforcement of hard work – a job well done.

I don’t believe in hiding our light under a basket. I’m going to keep this little light of mine shinning. I’m going to let it shine, shine, shine. :D

Sorry...didn't mean for it to be convoluted; was trying for straight sarcasm to make my point -- that being that I don't think it's bad at all to give hard-working kids some public accolades for their accomplishments.

Honestly, I'm sure there are very few coaches that actually get on here and take notes about specific kids from other schools.

OK, I thought you were poking at me AND Woody – a 2 for 1 deal. Maybe I'm the paranoid one. :D

BTW, I’ve been reading your posts in the Spring Training thread. It’s very good stuff.

Good luck to you and your Pikeville team this year. I would love to see y’all play.

He'd need an awfully BIG finger to poke you & me both though ;)

Glad to hear the Cats are in a football mentality there. Also glad coach is giving the roundballers a break. Thats good b/c they're just kids and some would go 24/7/365 if you allowed it. Plus thats being supportive of those talented enough and desiring to compete in multiple sports/activities.

Im always for congratulating/promoting kids on their efforts (not JUST achievements). Ive always been a PT Barnum type in that regard. Of course in Ashland thats always served as tweaking our competitors as a side benefit:sssh:

No one has commented on my ? about lift-a-thons, contests, etc. You could also have end of spring practice (or other seasonal period) contests of speed, agility, etc drills. you could reward/acknowledge either overall % improvement or those by position, grade, etc for the team, or even all HS athletes, or even students not currently playing a sport? - that might be a way of allowing a coach to getting someone to particpate?

Just typing as I think (thats why you proibably hear gears grinding loudly:p )

PS to Pikeville: is my former JFL'er & Tomcat QB still helping out with your team?

Cheers, Woody

Another good day of practice! Freshman Blake McCleod is looking really good! Keep it up guys.
