Ashland 2006

Featured Replies

Goliath: thanks for the update on Mahan. I’m told that he has been working at the YMCA with Ashland’s graduating QB. I’m glad to see that he is getting stronger and showing results.

I have also been told that Darrell is listed as number 1 on the depth chart at QB. This probably doesn’t mean much yet, because it is so early. But, it is a good start. I hope that he (and the rest of the team) keeps working hard in the off season – it will pay off on the field. I believe that hard work will lead to success.

Getting anxious,

Correct on both accounts.

It is Mahan's job to lose. McDavid would be a fine QB for Ashland. He's played the position most of his life and started a few games as a sophmore for an injured Holbrook. He's best at WR though so unless Mahan really messes up, you'll see him under center this fall.

As I said in posts about this subject months ago, you will always miss the very good ones lost to graduation, but the maturation of the younger players always provides a few surprises come August.

I agreed with you then Kick, and I still do. High school teams lose players to graduation every year - and every year someone steps up to take their place. This is part of what makes high school sports so exciting.

Let’s not get carried away here with the flattery of an old man– it’s not good for my heart.

Back on subject:

I’m really looking forward to seeing this year’s team take the practice field. I think our running game should be a lot more effective this year. The key will be the play of the linemen.

Our linemen have gotten stronger in the off-season. Walters, Gallaher, Parsley and Salyers are all putting up big numbers in the weight room. I expect that they will be able to open some equally big holes.

Follow that up with a hard running, or blocking, Davis and add in some speed and a few passes here and there - it should be a sight to see.

I hope you are right, GB.

Davis exploded onto the scene last year with some good power running late in the year, it would be good to see an entire season of that with some experienced linemen of whom in the first of the year received more criticism than applause. Let's hope they redeem themselves and Ashland has a good year at running the ball. The passing game last year was excellent, but with the loss of our soul, Hollbrook, next years team needs to move on. And maybe the running game is it.

Only if Ian could come back for one more year would my fantasy come true.

It won’t be long now until spring practice begins. I understand that the team has been working hard in the weight room all winter and maxed out this week.

Here are the three highest maxes from each lift.

Squat:

Walters - 600

Gallaher - 535

Davis - 515

Bench:

Walters - 330

Parsley - 275

Gallaher - 275

Cleans:

Salyers - 255

Gallaher - 245

Walters - 235

I think these are impressive numbers. I can’t wait to see them on the practice field.

Cordell Earl got 245 on cleans.

Jeremy Nethercutt got 275 up on bench.

From what i have been hearing, Nethercutt said he isn't going to play next season? Anyone else herd anything bout this?

Aint that the truth. Ive been itching for some football. I have actually been watching the films from this past season everynight for the past few days.

Surely not.

Surely not.

I'm pretty sure their is some trouble with him and a member of the coaching staff. I'll just leave it at that.
