If Apple follows through on its reported $3-billion-plus deal for Beats, Carlyle’s take would be upward of $1.5 billion, or about $1 billion profit.

 

Not bad for a seven-month-old investment, and surely support for Carlyle’s growing interest in taking large minority stakes in companies as control investments become more difficult to come by, and more expensive.

Maybe stream music wireless on the headphones connected to wifi? Can you do that already? I wouldn't ever pay $150 for a pair of headphones so I don't own a pair of beats.

 

Beats has a wireless option for about $280. Good headphones, but too young for this dog. Bose noise canceling probably a better buy for flying…..

I subscribe to a service offered by MOG. 9 bucks a month to "download" songs to my phone. When you cancel your service, all your music is gone.

I'm pretty pleased with it so far. You can download single songs or entire albums.

 

Pandora plays random songs that the app thinks you may like. MOG ( I believe the company was recently purchased by beats) allows you to choose the songs you listen to.

At best? I strongly disagree...

 

For the money they cost I'm not sure I would even put them at average. They are good head phones but should cost closer to $50 instead of $300. Kids want the b on the side so mommy and daddy shell out the $. Overrated is probably a better word, extremely overrated.

Agreed. I've been into radio sound studios and music recording studios alike, and I've never come across a pair of Beats. For $300, you can do WAY WAY better than a pair of Beats. They're not bad, by any stretch, but they're not anywhere near $300 worth of good either. I've got a $50 pair of Sony noise cancelling headphones that I'd put up against any pair of Beats.

My understanding is that you can't create custom play lists in ITunes radio. That's a big deal.

 

Plus Beats already has agreements in place with record companies that are better than Apple might get.

 

This last one is the biggest reason. The way I understand it Apple wants to merge the music service technologies because iTunes usage/downloads are declining. This cuts out a competitor and shores up their service v. Pandora, which has been killing iTunes.

Dre owns about 25%.

My kids got together and got me a Beats Pill XL for Christmas, and I absolutely love it. Sound quality and volume from such a small device is phenomenal.

That's no different than anything else we buy, IMO. The shoes we wear don't cost nearly as much to make as we pay for them. Same with clothes.
