May 4, 201412 yr Isn't this great? I'm hoping the rest of the nation will adopt something similar. I would like to see $15.00 per hour but if it goes to $12.50 per hour I won't complain. This means workers will be compensated fairly, they will be more enthusiastic on their jobs, and Seattle will be booming because a lot of people are going to want to move there since they don't discriminate on minimum wage.

You are assuming that there will be nothing to offset the higher wage. If more money is going out the door in businesses there then they have to raise their prices to match. Which then ripples to other areas. Eventually, the buying power of that $15/hr is diminished because of raised prices. It will happen because it always happens. It's why $5/hr didn't do it. It's why $7/hr doesn't do it. Prices will always go up to match. These people are in the business of MAKING MONEY.

May 4, 201412 yr Great to reduce entry level jobs and remove personal freedom. Yes, the minimum wage reduces personal freedom. What if I am willing to work for $7 an hour? What the job can only support that wage? The the job is not created and people who would be willing to work it are prevented from obtaining work. That is called reduced freedom. Now, the math. Most full time workers work around 2,000 hours a year plus or minis around 200 either way. A $15 minimum wage means that the annual income of a 'minimum wage' worker would be around $30,000. That is what a lot of college graduates hope to get coming out of college today - if they can find a job. So if this were done the wages of a minimum wage worker would the same as some college graduates. So....why go to college? Just flip burgers after HS and make $120,000 in 4 years - instead of spending $120,000 on a degree. That's a $240,000 swing. Lets see if the colleges line up for this new minimum wage.

Employers are going to pay what a persons value is, and if they don't like what they are getting paid they have the option to move on. I hate when Big Gov't comes in an tells businesses what to pay. The Gov't couldn't manage a Kool-Aid stand, and they want to tell business how to run things...:no::ohbrother: Plus, the cost of those goods and services will HAVE TO GO UP to off-set the increase in the wages. Have fun paying $5.00 for that McDouble that once use to be on the dollar menu, or the kid's meal that now becomes $8.99. Minimum wage jobs are not jobs meant to be had to support a wife and 3 kids.

A lot of people (especially Republicans) act as if minimum wage workers were second class people. Have you all not thought about the situations of these people? They deserve the same opportunity as everybody else, and should feed their kids. Greedy CEO's may not like it, well they can just cut their excessive pay that they use for their big mansions. You really need to break away from Fox News and get into the mainstream with what is really going on in society.

Unless a person has some sort of learning disability, they have the same opportunities the rest of us have. Get a degree or learn some type of trade so you don't have to work a minimum wage job.

Business would have an incentive to leave Seattle. I guess some residents would as well. Who wants to pay $10 for a gallon of milk. It is naive to think that you can just randomly raise wages and not have negative effects.

What the issue is, is what is a job worth. Let's be honest, it's hard to argue a cashier at Mcdonalds is worth $15/hour. It's basic unskilled labor. An important, and necessary job, but not one that generates revenue, or requires any special skills. Higher, specialized skill sets and training lead to better wages. If you start rewarding basic unskilled jobs with higher wages, it doesn't do much to encourage people to go after those higher skills. Also, lets face it, payroll is an expense, and already, often the greatest expense a business pays. When expenses rise, either prices have to rise, or things have to be cut. As it is, payroll is often the first area to get slashed. Off the chart high minimum wages are going to eliminate many jobs, or shutter many businesses, especially the smaller, locally based businesses.
