The government didn't get us into the hole. Well, they did but that was George Bush. Thankfully, he is out of office now, but two terms of Obama won't be enough to get us out of the big mess he left for us.

 

Honestly, I would like to see a flat wage for everybody - something of $20/hour like you mentioned. It will take time, and the government may need to bail out a couple of companies, but it worked well with General Motors so I expect it to do big things. You can't sit there and deny that George Bush isn't the reason that we're in the hole we are today.

I don't think it would take enough terms for the worst president in U.S. history to get us out of this hole. I don't think it's possible for George W. Bush to get us out of this hole.

 

You honestly get fed by Fox News don't you? What has worked in the past? You mean what got us down in this hole which was caused by Bush? Obama's programs have all been working - I think it'll be a couple more years before you see the true result. Avoid Fox News and try to find a better source for your information.

If you raise an entry-level worker's pay to $15 you also have to raise every other person's pay. If a manager makes $20 today he/she is not going to still be making $20 when the newbie is at $15.

 

In my limited experience, "wage equity" never seems to happen.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion. People are entitled to believe they can walk across a Los Angeles freeway too. But what you are proposing and the freeway crossing would both end in disaster.

This new initiative will be phased in over 5 to 7 years depending on the size of your business and whether your business offers benefits.

 

I wish there were a law against having laws that 'automatically' do things like 'phase in' or 'expire'. It is the politicians coward's way out for one. And lets future legislative bodies and individual politicians have an out when the automatic thing happens.

 

Pass the law and make the law perpetual. When it needs to be changed, phased in, reduced, expanded, etc. then take another vote and change the law for the specific circumstances.

 

'Phasing in' something of this magnitude could lead to disaster.

Shame on you all for not wanting people to receive fair compensation for their duties. A lot of people (especially Republicans) act as if minimum wage workers were second class people. Have you all not thought about the situations of these people? They deserve the same opportunity as everybody else, and should feed their kids. Greedy CEO's may not like it, well they can just cut their excessive pay that they use for their big mansions.

Minimum wage jobs are not meant for people who need to take care of more than one dependent. Minimum wage jobs are for extra cash on the side or teenagers or a temporary thing until a higher paying job becomes available.

Minimum wage is no longer just a wage for teenagers. Many people are supporting families on one or more minimum wage jobs. As college costs soar and the ability to pay for postsecondary education wanes, more people get stuck in low wage jobs with little advancement opportunity.

 

I'm not sure raising the minimum wage is the answer. But to act like there is no problem is adding to the problem. If we want people to look at social aid programs as a last resort instead of a permanent way of life, there needs to be a wage that can feed, house and provide the means to support a family.

I don't know anybody who does not believe that there is a problem. For myself, I see a massive federal government draining resources from the private economy and imposing thousands of new regulations on that economy every year. A large welfare state and a prosperous economy with good paying jobs cannot coexist.

 

Smoke and mirrors have got the nation's unemployment rate down to 6.3 percent but the number of able-bodied adults who are not in the workforce has soared and now stands at the highest level in history.

 

A "college education" in too many instances has become nothing more than a scam that provides little in the way of education and a heaping portion of personal debt. As Milton Friedman often said, "There is no such thing as a free lunch." Somebody has to pay for dubious college education and it looks like taxpayers will end up footing the bill.

 

The government created the current situation and more government will only make matters worse. Obama has put us on the same foolish course that did in the Roman Empire - only this country is declining at a much faster rate.
