He was pretty darn successful recruiting and winning in his first stint, and that was before Louisville was recognized at all nationally. I think he'll be just fine.

 

How long was he at Louisville? 4 years. Arkansas 4 years.

 

The teams after he left went down the drain. Perhaps the coaching hires weren't great, but the talent level currently at Arkansas is awful. Brett Bielema can't coach? Seriously?

 

Petrino has shown to be a master X and O coach. But he has failed to build a program that is sustainable through recruiting. Landing the best QB in the country and a future NFL back that live in your home city doesn't prove you can recruit.

 

I'm not saying he can or can't recruit, but the results his programs have shown would not believe an outsider to believe that he can. Heck of a QB coach though and overall one of the best 5 or 6 in game coaches in the country IMO. But, with his lack of recruiting success I wonder how much his image will continue to hurt him.

 

Its a good hire for Louisville, but not the for sure home run that Strong was. JMO.

Petrino also inherits a program in a much better position than Stoops did from a talent standpoint and a conference standpoint. The ACC won the title last year but is extremely top heavy. Much better than anything Louisville has played in, but lets not compare it to the ACC.

 

Petrino inherits a team that won a BCS bowl two years ago, and is coming off another big season last year. Completely different, I can't believe you'd even make that argument.

The year after he left Louisville, virtually the same team remained, especially on offense. They went from 12-1 to 6-6 in ONE YEAR with the same offense. Kragthorpe ran the program in the ground, and negated any work that Petrino had done. The man was in over his head. How is that Petrino's fault? The players were to win games, and Kragthorpe couldn't do it.

 

Charlie Strong was a good hire, but not one that isn't able to be duplicated. His focus was on defense, and the defense was better than it had been. Again, that has to do with Kragthorpe. The offense under strong underachieved, the entire time. While at UofL, Petrino had guys like Amobi Okoye, Elvis Dumervil, Johnny Patrick, Will Gay... All NFL guys. He may not have been the "Home Run" hire that many always call for, but IMO, he was definitely the best option. Time will tell if it works out.

Gotta live in 2014. You all greatly underestimate what Charlie brought and did for UL. Bobby is a good coach who had nowhere to go but UL. Stoops is an unknown but a rising unknown. I like the 1 dollar UK stock vs the 10 dollar UL stock right now.

Your argument for the slide would be more valid if we didn't just see the same exact thing at Arkansas. The 6-6 season was a disaster, but what about after that? Where was the talent? Once you can right off. Twice you have to think it may be more than just a coincidence. John L. Smith wasn't going to win. But, there just isn't alot of talent at Arkansas right now. Bobby recruited those guys....The guys Bobby won with at Arkansas were not recruited by him for the most part, and that's in the heart of SEC country were talent falls off trees.

Didn't read who said that but that even makes more sense that saying Petrino will have more instance success than Stoops. Stoops would even tell you Bobby will have more instance success. Stoops is still really an unknown, but he's done as good a job as a UK fan could really ask. He lost to WKU, but with the talent both teams had last year it wasn't really surprising.

So some people say that when he gets ALL of his own players he struggles....well, that's 4 years from now.....we'll just have to see then...

Again, I can't really comment on what went on at Arkansas. I just didn't follow it. Some people have said "other people couldn't win with Petrino's recruits..." That's one of the silliest things I've ever heard. Why does it matter if anybody except Petrino could win with is recruits? Doesn't every coach bring in the guys that work for HIS system? As long as Petrino wins with his recruits that is all that matters. In his 4th year at UofL, with a team full of guys he recruited, they went 12-1 and won the Orange Bowl. That's what I base my opinion on, and if it blows up in my face, then so be it.

At least in my mind, Petrino is a more proven commodity who has accomplished more than anyone on UK's staff. He beat UK last year with Western, and he'll be favored to beat them again this year with a better team in Louisville.

 

I don't think it's anything about success of the programs to say that UK has a larger fan base if you look at the State as a whole though. I honestly think that Louisville could win a national title and the next year, they'd still have fewer fans than UK if you polled the state. It's not a knock on Louisville or Petrino, it's just the lay of the land. UK has a larger enrollment, is in a more central area of the state, and has the state's name, so more people will identify with it regardless of success. I think that's all Brown meant by "we're the show in town & the state"... at least that's how I took it. I just thought it meant more of a "we have a bigger fan base", not "we're have the best product on the field".

 

For an analogy, I'd liken it to people in Texas who are fans of the Texas Rangers or Houston Astros if the two's recent success on the field was reversed. Houston's fans are more concentrated in that immediate area, are more "die hard" than the Rangers, but the Rangers have the state's name, a Texas flag on their cap, and, given the choice, are more likely to be the team that more Texans would say they prefer in a head-to-head survey with the Astros.

 

 

Regardless of what he meant and whether or not I'm mistaken in inferring that, I'd be more worried if he'd said something like "Louisville is probably going to crush us this year and recruits shouldn't come here until something changes".

 

All that said, I think Brown probably had an idea (or at least does now) that what he said would get a reaction from both fan bases, and that it was a bit of a swipe at Louisville.

Depends on what your definition of "top talent" is. Here are the individual rankings for each of his classes, sortable by year. Here are the national rankings for each of his classes.

 

2005 he had five 4* kids (43rd overall).

2006 he had one 5* and four 4*'s (26th overall).

2007 had had six 4*'s (47th overall).

 

 

Doug Beaumont and Vic Anderson were a couple of kids who were 4*'s out of Louisville high schools, and he landed both of them.

 

 

I don't know if this really fits what you're going for with landing top talent, but Montrell Jones (Male) & Eric Shelton (Lex. Bryan Station) were both huge recruits from KY who transferred out of Tennessee and Florida State respectively to come to play for him. Those guys were both big recruits coming out of high school. In 2006, he had Willie Williams transfer in, and that was probably his most talented recruit (but was also arrested on a recruiting visit to one of the big Florida schools and generally considered a gamble).

 

 

Petrino is generally thought of as a guy who isn't a greatrecruiter (at least compared to the success he's had and speaking to pulling in top flight talent). He'll pick his spots on the recruiting trail and usually put together a fairly solid class considering, but the consensus is that most of his worth is in taking what he's got and developing it. Again, most of his players who've stuck around the NFL have been underrated players that he's plucked out of Florida.
