April 22, 201412 yr Yes but they now they probably lose out on Cueto and Latos. Bailey better form into a #1 real soon, because he is the Reds #1 when they lose the other two. I give you this teams Little Big Horn, Homer as this teams # 1 welcome back to the 1980's Reds.
April 22, 201412 yr Different than what I hear. Walt made it pretty clear during the offseason that they took care of Homer first because his deal was up first. Not the type of long term plan that makes you feel warm and fuzzy...
April 22, 201412 yr Different than what I hear. So they went into negotiations to buy out his arbitration years with no intention of getting into his FA years? I find that hard to believe.

April 22, 201412 yr Walt made it pretty clear during the offseason that they took care of Homer first because his deal was up first. Not the type of long term plan that makes you feel warm and fuzzy... Correct. My understanding is the plan was always to sign Homer first, which, clearly, I categorically disagree with. There are some within the Reds that aren't convinced locking up Mat is the best idea, which, again, I'm not down with.
April 22, 201412 yr I loved the Homer deal, and I still do. I firmly believe he'll be worth every penny of it.

April 22, 201412 yr On this staff, no. He is #3. Most staffs he's a #1 or #2. They just paid the #3 $105mil. Are you happy with that? Serious question.

No one thought the Reds would be worse before the season than me, but to refer to the last few years as "also rans" is crazy. In baseball, as you certainly know, making the post-season is hard. They've done it frequently the last few years. Would it have been nice to have gotten over the hump a time or two, won some series, and maybe played into the Fall Classic? Heck yes. But to dismiss the last few years as anything but very good is silly. Now, I've repeatedly said I think their window has closed and their future is bleak because they are financially broken (with an array of bad deals) AND their farm system is decimated (minus Stephenson). I still think they are a 75 win team, and I can say that without the "it is early" mantra being thrown in my face because I said it all winter. I'm a huge Reds' fan and I'll enjoy watching with my son regardless, but me being dead-wrong and them winning 95 games would be a lot more fun.
