Was the head coach of the Junior team there at the tryouts on Saturday? I heard he wasn't there.

I'd take Hagen Tyler over 3/4ths of that list. I wasn't at the tryouts so I can't say what happened there but he's one of the top juniors in the state.

He looked good enough to belong to me and any All Star team should want a kid with his ability to shoot the rock on the team. I'd argue that he would have been the best pure shooter on the team had he made the team.

Well that's questionable to me then. I watched a lot last season and he belongs on this team, IMO.

While at the tryouts I had this conversation with a high school assistant and based on what we saw at the tryouts there is no way they could have picked the top 18 players of that day based on the performances in the gym. Tryouts were from 10-4 and from what I saw with the exception of Terrell Gray during the drills there wasn't anyone who stood out to me. When everyone does what you expect them to do, it becomes political and you go with the 'name' kids.

 

That's different than "political." That's just not having enough time to see everyone in person. You then fall back on other coaches , stats, recruiting, etc.

Gotcha. I can see that with one or two selections.

Well, all I know is what I saw with my own eyes at the Bearcat Classic.

 

Our Shining Star team beat the Hoops Dream team that has 3 players on it from that list. We were up by 17 points at one point late in the second half. Bo Schuh, I would argue, is our best player.... and btw, he was not even at the game.

 

Again, I don't see how Mr. Schuh's name is not on that list.

Did we ever establish how kids are chosen to tryout? Who determines that list? Is it simply a list sent in from HS coaches? is it AAU Coaches? is it hearsay? Parents call in and make a suggestion? How does the nomination process take place.....

Not really. I think they knew who they were taking before tryouts even began. I think Terrell Gray helped himself Saturday. I think the rest were predetermined. If it were based on their junior season Ronnie Carson would have made the team. The tryout roster said he averaged 26 points, 8 rebounds and 11 assists this season.

Congrats to Ryan Cline and his family! My son was on his team from kindergarten through 3rd grade. His dad, Mike Cline, was the coach. There is a perfect example of a little skinny guard who got tall. Fortunately he was always given the opportunity to play guard from a very young age.

So glad to see DJ Jenkins make the team. Was impressed when I saw him play this past year.

No way Carson and Tyler shouldn't be on that team. Same could probably be said for Taylor. Carson and Taylor are truly just PG's so maybe that hurt their chances given the guards that were "givens." What I can say, with confidence, is that all three are top 20 kids in their class.

It's a deep class and they chose to go with athleticism..(not surprising with hoptown coaches)..only put one shooter on there and that was justice.. Hagan Tyler ,Tanner Johnson ,Jax Levitch, Peyton Woods (4 of 5 best shooters in state along with justice) could all help this and any team.. not saying there were any wrong choices ..just odd they would take a lot of the kids that have the same qualities and not any shooters..

^^The only problem with that argument is that it doesn't explain them leaving Carson off the list.
