Excellent effot by both teams. Jones simply took over. I think Coach McGlone may of coached the best game of the year. Their zone defense forced the ball out of McCowans hands. West showed their true potential tonight by defeating the top team in the region on their home court. This was one of the few times this year West came to play for the entire 32 minutes. (Bryan Station and East the 1st time). If they play as hard as they did tonight no one will want to line up against them in Morehead. As for Morgan I thought each player and coach displayed a tremendous amount of class after the game.

Please read Net's post above for this explanation. First off, I'd like to congratulate West Carter on an excellent defensive game plan as well as "near perfect" offensive execution. Morgan played extremely tight last night. Playing not to lose will lead to exactly that result. Shortarming shots and throwing tentative passes all night. I never thought I would see an individual beat this team but it happened last night on the offensive end. Jones was unstoppable last night and hit big shot after big shot. The last being a running one hander in the lane over Blake. :eek: I'd still like to say this has been a very enjoyable season to watch and the guy's should be very proud of their accomplishments this season. These seniors have left the program in excellent shape and are all very outstanding young men. The parking situation was ludicrous but what can you expect with some of the leadership over there at this time. :irked:

Caveman, I knew you'd be on here sooner or later. So, now that you hacked on me yesterday for not picking Perry as 16th region coach of the year, how did he contribute to the loss tonight, or did he? BTW, I am not trying to be abrasive here, just curious if you cast any fault his way. We all know he can't go out there shoot the jumpers for them, but the theme early in this thread was that folks thought that they were looking past West and to the final. So does he shoulder any of the responsibility in your opinion? :confused:

Total shocker. I've seen Morgan play and they were for real. West must have really came to play...I always love to see a good upset. Kind of feel sorry for Morgan's fans and players though...seems like the school and community were really embracing their team and getting behind them for another trip to Rupp. Regardless of how many seniors they loose, I bet they will be a top team in the region again next year.

McGlone put in a great game plan and his players executed to perfection, only committing 4 turnovers. Jones simply took over offensively and defensively. Barker played an excellent floor game. McGowan was unstoppable early, but inexplicably, Morgan County completely quit trying to get him the ball in the last five minutes. Great win for the Comets and Coach McGlone.

Making my picks, I could never get comfortable with any of the 16th Region Teams. I've taken Morgan on BGP and Boyd in the local paper.

Me too, took Morgan in the local paper. One gone in the very first district game, not good! :madman:

First, Morgan County never overlooked West Carter at any point in preparation or during the game. The 100% credit goes to the West Carter basketball team. They out did Morgan Co. in every facet of the game. They had a game plan and executed to perfection. The Comets hardly ever turned the basketball over. 1 at halftime and probably less than 3 in 2nd half or maybe game.

 

While Kalen Jones was unstoppable...he would hit three's or simply penetrate and create his shot, I believe one of West's spark plugs was PG Daniel Barker. He ran an excellent PG, distributing, running the offense, and playing very poised. That is where I think the Comets really clicked.

 

Congrats to Stan McGlone and staff for an excellently played basketball game. It was well officiated, so nobody can say the "refs" cost 'em the game. It was a case in which West Carter beat the Cougars fair and square. They earned it and will advance.

Myself, I'm simply heartbroken.

 

I truly love Morgan County and the Cougars. They have a great community and have built a great basketball program (working on football, too!) Matthew Perry is one of the best high school basketball coaches in the entire state. Blake McCowen and company are class acts through and through. I heard a player from another team comment about the class the Cougars show both on and off the floor.

 

I'm devestated for you right now, guys. But I know you all well enough to know you will all be successful in whatever you do. You've already shown the character, dedication, and work ethic required for success.

Jones is good, but he is not Owens! Morgan Co. just didn't do what they needed to in order to win the game and as a result they will unfortunately have to set at home. But West is not that good, at least on a consistent basis. They should not have beaten Morgan. I think that West has had their last ambush for this season. The next opponent will be waiting on them!!

I think you're wrong, they can beat whomever advances to the final, especially if it's East, IMO. :thumb:

If everyone remebers, East and West split the regular season matchups. I think that West Carter is as volnerable as any team that is left in the 62nd District, or the region for that matter. To beat West Carter you have to limit the touches Jones has. Any coach in the region should be able to figure out a way to do that. He is obviously going to get his points, but 30 out of a teams 49, is not going to happen everynight. It is going to be interesting to see how the remainder of the tournament...

Every head coach must accept some responsibility for losses on the court but I can promise you the team was well aware of the capabilities of West Carter. Morgan's staff is excellent at game prep and scouting. As I said before, this team was not overlooking West at all. I believe they felt a huge amount of pressure and played accordingly. West felt absolutely no pressure to win and was loose and played fearless ball because of it. We were up five with 2:00 to go and poor quick shots in addition to a couple of costly turnovers caused our demise. The coach caused neither one of these mistakes. As a matter of fact he was pleading, screaming, and or begging from the bench to control the ball and not to force the matter. It was West's night, they earned it and I congratulate them and wish them luck down the road. This doesn't change my opinion of coach Perry in the least. I'm thankful for all he's done in changing the basketball mindset at my school and I'd like to see him there for many years to come. :thumb:

Well it is very sad to see Morgan lose like this with the team that they had this year. It is like watching a Top 5 UK team lose in the first round of the NCAA tourney. And lets not forget the Morgan seniors who lost out on a great opportunity to go to Rupp. I am sure that they are more sad than us fans. The Cougars had a great year and just had one of those nights. It can happen to any team and has over time. All we can do is just reflect on the great season that the Cougars had and move on. I wish all of the Morgan players, especially the seniors, the best and I'm sure they will be fine. Best of luck next season!!

I agree that West CAN beat anyone left in the District on a given night. But I would not say they will win the District just yet. But I was thinking more in terms of the Regional. And I think that West has had their "given night" already!
