Must be a Boyd County fan. Did you see the WC/ BC game in early December? 4 point game? Jones was the best player on the floor. 26,and 15, on 11/18 from the floor. Owens is a fantastic athlete...but it's the intangibles (basketball IQ) that guys like Vanhoose, McDavid, McGowan and Jones have that make players complete.

 

Not a BC fan necessarily! But Owens is a leading scorer on a ppg basis (30 for Owens v. 21 for Jones) and considering that this is his first year, he is by far the player of the year. The POY doesn't necessarily have to be the most basketball intelligent. In fact, Owens has several weaknesses. But he has talent that other players don't have and has made a major impact on his team (single game scoring record) and the region. If you are going to look at basketball IQ, then you have several Morgan players and several other players from other schools in the Region that would have to be considered. POY should be an IMPACT player that brings something to the Region. 21 ppg on an 11-15 team just doesn't do it for most people (even if they did knock off Morgan). And I do not mean any disrespect to West in any way or to Jones. Jones is a very good athlete and West is going to the Region! Just my opinion on POY and good luck to West!

Wow, I'm late getting this news. It makes me feel like I've been living in a cave. The region is really up for grabs now. But, I have to agree with Spindoc.

 

 

 

 

Our region may not now be as well represented in Rupp.

 

No doubt that the best (or most talented) team in the 16th went down last night, but we would have been underdogs at Rupp anyway! May the best team on the given night win and may the players and fans have fun. That is what it is all about anyway! And as we all know, upsets do happen!

No disrespect to the other teams, but the best thing that could happen to our Region now, is for Boyd or Russell to make it to Rupp. It would be nice to see Owens or Vanhoose light someone up in Rupp....Ashland, Fairview and Elliott would make a great showing and possibly are better than Boyd or Russell, but Owens and Vanhoose are the Premiere players in our Region for now.

I really think Morgan was the only team that had a shot of upsetting anyone in Rupp, but would love to see the Lions on the floor at Rupp.

Maybe you should reserve judgment on POY or any other postseason award then...if you haven't seen the region's best, you're not qualified to make a recommendation.

 

I have watched Owens 4 times this season, so I have seen the region's best.

Perry still ranks as one of, if not, the best coach in the region. That being said, McCowan should have gotten more touches in the 4th quarter. West Carter could do very little to stop him in the paint other than collapse and foul. He dominated the first 2 1/2 quarters.

I don't remember McCowan dominating at any point in the game. He was in early foul trouble, and only finished with 12 points. I thought Haney should have gotten more touches, he is a beast on the block, West had no answer.

You get no argument from me – especially about the “may they have fun” part.

You make a good point. I can agree that showcasing our region’s best talent is probably the best outcome.

 

If Ashland can’t go – I’ll cheer for Boyd Co. or Russell in their place. I’d prefer Boyd Co. though.

As I said earlier, the best team on "the given night" will go to Rupp. But it would be nice to see Owens get an opportunity to show the State what he can do. As for 16th Region success, Morgan had the best opportunity to advance at all at Rupp, but all we can now hope for is to showcase some of our most talented players.

McCowan only had 12 points because he stopped getting the ball. In the first half when he got it inside 10 feet he scored at will. A 6-6 post man with talent in this region is rare and should be utilized, especially in close games. Morgan usually goes to him a little more, but he was the forgotten man in this game when the game was on the line. The fact he had 14 rebounds shows a little dominance in the paint.
