Had zero expectations for this season with no good players at all and actually was screwing up the tank plan for a short stretch where he won some games. I think he's going to be there for a little while.

They're completely different atmospheres. In the NBA you're dealing with guys getting paid, who don't necessarily want to or care to listen to what you've got to say. In the college game it's much more suited to teaching and learning. Also, the NBA doesn't care about your "resume". K, Billy D, Izzo, Self, Roy, Cal, etc. know they're at their respective schools pretty much until they decide otherwise. In the NBA if they don't win, and do so quickly, they're out of a job. NBA jobs are better than college jobs, especially at the elite franchises such as the Celtics.

I would say the NBA job is better as typically the coaches are paid way better than most NCAA jobs, and that fact that you do not have to recruit which is basically a year round ordeal for the college coaches. The offseason is actually an offseason for an NBA coach.

And I'd imagine that the big-market NBA cities provide a TON of opportunities to make even more money doing endorsements to bring in extra-contractual income.

For a team making the NBA Finals, the offseason is the month of July and August. :(

 

They better get paid handsomely. Living out of a suitcase from September through June, and having to babysit multimillionaire primadonnas.

I completely disagree. College coaches have to spend two to three years and sometimes even longer figuratively holding the hands of these kids. Traveling the AAU circuit, spending all weekend in high school gyms, constant letters, phone calls, text messages, etc. Not to mentions fundraisers, alumni events, etc. I'd go as far to say that for a high level NCAA coach such as Cal the actual practices and games are the easy part of the job.

Top half of NBA coaches make no more than the top 16 College Coaches. Coach K would take a pay cut if he was the highest paid NBA Coach.

I'd be cool with Ford, he's done a great job at OKST. If he can get the players he has there I would imagine he would recruit at a high level at UK, that's half the battle. X&O wise he's not bad, and plays an entertaining style of basketball. I know a lot of UK fans despise him for whatever reason, but he's far from the worst they could do, I think he would actually do alright.

If Cal leaves, I would like Billy Donovan and then John Bielien (sp), as far as coaching ability goes. Don'r know whether either would pass the "CEO" test to be the UK head coach.

Billy Donovan isn't coming to Kentucky. Has zero interest in it. Doubt Miller would leave Arizona either. Pearl would definitely take it IMO, and I wouldn't touch Matta with a 100 foot pole.

Shaka Smart

Sean Miller

Bruce Pearl

Travis Ford (would seriously consider rooting for a different program if he were coach)

Tom Izzo

Steve Alford

Thad Matta

John Beilien

 

Of your list I'd make an offer to Miller. He's good. Woudn't mind Pearl. Hate Ford, would be in the same boat as you.

However, I'd make a Godfather offer to Bill Self. He probably wouldn't take it, but I'd throw about 6 or 7 million at him and make him say no. Would be the only guy that could possibly replicate what Cal has done from a talent collection standpoint IMO.

Coach Cal is an absolute basketball junkie. Basketball is his hobby. Doesn't drink, doesn't play golf. He is one of the coaches who put in many hours.

 

You are kidding yourself is you think ALL these highly paid coaches have the schedule you outline. That is why their assistant coaches are also paid handsomely.
