NKY Coach of the Year

Featured Replies

If we are going to include Pendleton, then I will cast my vote for Gallatin Co.'s Jon Jones.

The Wildcats are 17-8 despite having only 1 senior. His rotation also includes 3 juniors, 3 sophs, and 2 frosh.

Gallatin also is small, has no consistent three point threat, and are dreadful at the foul line. They also have a heart that could not fit into most gyms.

They won the 8th Region Class A, though most thought they were a year away. They have lost only 1 game they "should" have won, a 1 point road loss last week.

The most telling stat is they are 14-3 in games decided by 9 points or less.

That, my friends, is no accident. That points to terrific coaching.

I think I'd vote for Goetz, first year coach with a few big wins under his belt.

Nice avatar. Wish I had thought of it. :ylsuper: Yep. Uh Huh.

If Pendleton is included it has to be him. They lost 3 starters that now play college basketball. They accounted for over 60 percent of their points last year. To have an even better record with a very tough schedule speaks volumes.

If Pendleton doesnt win, Willie from highlands should get the nod.

You can make an argument for Coach Schlarman coming off a tough year, but they returned everyone. He has done a great job. Coach Listerman has done a good job as well. CCH certainly doesn't ever have to rebuild they just reload year in and year out. They have a terrific record against NKY teams, and have played a heck of a non region schedule. That race is as open as the Ninth Region title!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pendleton County is 25-2. That is amazing!

Erik Goetz without question.

Give me a coach of the year that isn't loaded with talent and athletes but still can compete. Ala, Bacigalupo.

That doesn't exist!!!

I'm not sure I'd agree that Willie has a lot of talent. Other than Vories, I'd consider the rest of them as average players who worked their tails off. Sorry respective players and parents thereof but it was intended as a compliment. I think Willie deserves the nod for taking a bunch of average players, devising a system that they can be successful in and getting them to get the maximum amount out of their talent.

I would agree with you on this. I believe Willie has done a great job over the past 2 yrs even with the 9-20 record they lost many games by less than 5 pts. This year they have played a rigorous schedule with only 5 games at Home. I say he beats out Goetz by the hair he lacks on his heady head head.

:D

Coach Goetz gets my vote whether they beat CovCath or not. First-year coach inheriting a team with no proven go-to guy and they have had a fantastic season, surprising many people except for the Large Stud.

That doesn't exist!!!

I believe coaching is over-rated (which I think is what you're implying) and you have to have talent to win. However, there are some coaches that get more out of their kids than previous coaches have. That makes a huge difference. Plus, some coaches tailor their style of play to their personnel when others stick to what they want to do, therefore coaching matters.

That isn't exactly what I am implying, but you certainly have to have some talent to win. Coaching can be overrated in some cases. It also has to matter to the kids. You can be Ricky P in there, but if your kids accept being average then it doesn't matter how much you know. It also is a matter of if the players believe in you. As a coach if you know every play and defense known to man it doesn't mean squat if the kids don't respect you. I have seen it in so many cases. In regards to everyone's top 2 Coach Goetz and Coach Schlarman, it shows that their players respect them, and that is why they are where they are with good not great players!! The kids have skills and are disciplined and will do what is asked of them to do. It is also a tribute to who the kids are. They are coachable and that may have as much to do with being successful as anything.

I touched a lot of different things there, but I hope my point was understandable in their somewhere

I'd vote Goetz as well.
