DEDICATION!! Everything will take care of itself if you are dedicated 12 months per year!!!

I think practice, practice, practice and understanding the fundamentals. I see many kids playing AAU ball that are very athletic but have poor shooting skills as far as form, they have their head down when dribbling. These are fundamentals that can be mastered in your driveway or at he playground and that is where you need to be as much as you can if you want to be a great HS ballplayer.

Being smart. It can go a long way just being able to read screens good in high school basketball there are alot of athletic players that would be much better if they were smarter.

I believe it all comes down to fundamentals, and heart, no matter what the sport. If a player is fundamentally sound they will perform under pressure at a higher level when other players games fall apart. I will take a player with heart any day over one without, they will never give up on you and will lead the rest of the team, because it is contagious. If you get one with both qualities you have something very special.

1. DEDICATION

2. DESIRE

3. HEART

4. KNOWLEDGE OF THE GAME

One of the most important things is determination. The drive that a person has to reach their goal can't be underestimated. It's what keeps a person going when and if they reach any obstacles during their quest. Talent is a big part of the make up of a great basketball player, but don't be fooled. Even the greatly talented aren't guaranteed success. Each player needs to keep in shape to be able to withstand the physical grind of the game. Practicing all of the basic skills every day is a must. Dribbling, shooting, running, all should be practiced as much as possible. Keeping your dribbling and shooting skills up, your hand-eye coordination sharp, and your court vision will keep you in the game. And, perhaps most important, you have to have a strong attitude to succeed. You have to know what you can do, what you have to do, and just go out there and do it.

How many shots should you take a day ? Anybody

How many shots should you take a day ? Anybody

I don't think there is an exact #. We would play pickup games in the Armory from 11-4. Gym closed for 2 hr. Then we would come back 6-9 at night. When I shot alone, it was for hours. At home I would lay on my back and shoot a ball that just touched the ceiling in the same spot. Of course back then there wasn't anything else to do. No computers,Cable TV,Video games or texting on cell phones. If your posting is to help out a youngster you know, My advice besides hours of practice, is to master the fundamentals. Dribbling with both hands (eyes up) and correct shooting form are areas that a lot of youth fail to master.

The two things a player controls is his attitude and his effort.

Practice, determination, heart, etc can be filed in one of the two catagories.

Be willing to work hard and listen to coaches and take advise. Play the game because you want to not to please somebody else. An play against bigger and better players and learn from mistakes and build on them.

As many as you are physically able to without changing / losing your form.

Talent. Next question...

Perhaps. But to have a great player, they must have talent. You can have drive, determination, work ethic and love of the game oozing from your pores. But without talent, you will not be great. You will be ... Preston LeMaster or Patrick Sparks. Either of those players would give all that up to have Rondo's physical talent, because they know their ceiling is much lower, making them limited potential-wise. Without talent, the best you can be is a pretty good player.
