What it takes to be a great basketball player.

Perhaps. But to have a great player, they must have talent. You can have drive, determination, work ethic and love of the game oozing from your pores. But without talent, you will not be great. You will be ... Preston LeMaster or Patrick Sparks. Either of those players would give all that up to have Rondo's physical talent, because they know their ceiling is much lower, making them limited potential-wise. Without talent, the best you can be is a pretty good player.

^ I'll take LeMaster's and Sparks ability to shoot ball from anywhere on the court over Rondos superior talents which in include Jumping, running, dribbling. If you can't shoot a simple free throw or wide open 15' jumper you should not be playing the game.

Rondo is highly overated!

Rondo is the perfect example of a great talent not playing like a great player. Sparks and LeMaster (are we really still talking about this one game fluke) will never be great players. Good, hard working players? Sure. But they don't have the talent to EVER be great. Rondo does. What he does with it is on him...

Yeah, I agree with you there. LeMaster is a good fundementally sound basketball player. A star no!!! A good player Yes!!!

The question at hand is what does it take to be GREAT. To even think about it, you have to have the talent first...

Chris Lofton shot a thousand shot's a day through high school. Don't know if he still doe's or not.

DEDICATION!! Everything will take care of itself if you are dedicated 12 months per year!!!

I think you have to love the game and have that fire in you that no one can teach.

Ya gotta have that fire in your belly and a love for the game. You know the type that makes a kid sweep snow off his backyard court in January and shoot with heavy gloves on .

I`m sorry about the double post. I`m kinda new on this board. Plus about my bedtime.=======================================================================================

DJ - You might be new to the board, but you somehow upearthed this dinasour that was originated back in 2006.

To be great??? A great physical attribute first.

Ok, as GT said without talent you can't be GREAT. All great players had at least one great physical attribute. I coached a lot of kids who worked hard and got better. They could never be great.

A very supportive family goes a long way in helping a kid develop their game. There is a lot of running that comes with kids playing sports these days. A lot of time spent away from home taking their kids to and from practice, and games. Until that kid is old enugh to drive anyway. And ultimatley it falls back to the kid to push themselves to be the best player that they can possibly be.

1. DEDICATION

2. DESIRE

3. HEART

4. KNOWLEDGE OF THE GAME

I like these 4 plus I will add size, you can't teach it and life on the ball court is a lot easier with it.
