Top grades open the door to school dance in Montgomery - The Washington Post

It's sad that there are people complaining enough about this that it makes the news.

From the article:

"Students who earned straight A’s at Eastern Middle School in Silver Spring have been invited to a school dance Tuesday, a celebration that starts during the final period of the school day and includes a DJ, free pizza and a game room.

Students with B’s and C’s may join in later, when classes are over and pizza is no longer served. Students with lower grades are not invited at all."

While celebrating and honoring academic achievement should be done I can not say I like the approach.

It splits the student body into 3 categories - smart, average and dumb on its surface. While it honors the achievers it also overtly punishes the lowest echelon when they are '...not invited at all.'

Celebrate achievement and give them their due. But do not call out those who have not excelled with a blatant snub of the same event.

More likely the dumb category is comprised of lazy, not close to dumb.

Honor Roll Students at my daughters middle school receive a Free Season Pass to the local Water Park...rest of the kids have to pay to get in all summer.

I agree Doc it has more to do with being lazy or no one pushing them in middle school.

Many times there are no repercussions for not doing homework other than giving a zero for it. When I was in school, not completing assignments wasn't an option. Teachers made you make it up and hounded you daily until it was completed and if you didn't do it, you stayed after school and completed it. They just would not accept you not doing your home work. Students learned quickly that not doing their home work was not going to be acceptable. Today teachers just give students a zero and nothing is said or done beyond that in many cases.

Then by all means get rid of the National Honor Society. Let all graduations be in alphabetical order, and do not recognize any of the top students, or their honors.

Political correctness makes me want to :puke:

If I had to go to some nerds-only dance at school for getting As I would have purposefully thrown in some Bs to avoid that mess.

The 3 hottest girls in my high school had straight A's. Shoots your theory, at least where I went.

Poor attitude on multiple levels, I hope you'e kidding.

I am. Wrong thread for humor, I guess.

I thought it was funny, and I see no reason not to inject a little humor in this thread.

I think he is. I mean, have you read most of Habib's posts? Clearly a HUGE nerd.

I should know... we can smell our own.

Good to hear, I thought you might be joking but sometimes it's hard to tell.
