Both are "dual rostered" and will see time with both teams this year. Not too unusual for pitchers & catchers at this level.

Highlands takes on Cooper Saturday at 11. Dunn against Jones. Should be one of the better pitching matchups of the year. Jones will sit low 80's but will run some up to the mid's, Dunn will sit mid 80's and could touch the 90's. Its early but could be a great duel right out of the box.

Cooper will be without it's big bat with Hathorne having to sit out the first 2 games due to a horrible call in last year's district tourney game when he was thrown out of the game when he collided with the 1st baseman who stepped in his path. Hathorne raised his arms in an instinctive move to protect himself, the ump took it as an aggressive move and tossed him out of the game. Absolutely horrible call and will cost Cooper big time until he gets back for the 3rd game.

Not that I know of. I know his dad did talk to the ump who was behind the plate at that game just a couple weeks ago and he asked him why he didn't over rule the call at the time and the home plate ump said it wasn't his call.

 

It was a really bad call.

 

The play went like this. Hathorne at the plate hits a grounder, running down the line to first base the first baseman on the bag comes off the bag because of a bad throw which takes him right into the base path at the same instant Hathorne nears the bag. As the 1st baseman steps in front of Hathorne, Hathorne raises his arms to his chest, just as anyone would as an instinctive self defensive move. Because he raised his arms the 1st base ump said he was raising his arms in an aggressive manner and tossed him out of the game. It was really really bad call.

 

Cooper has a new Coach this year so it's not the same coach that was there last year. Really a shame. that's why I'm hoping these first couple games aren't rained out because I want the suspension to get over with quick for the kid.

Should be an interesting game. I think Highlands would have 3 or 4 games under their belts already by tomorrow and Cooper will have 0. Not even a scrimmage under their belts yet.

You cannot appeal a suspension that I am aware of.

Jones throws in the mid 80's. He was clocked at 87mph at a PBR event a month or so ago. He has one of the nastiest splitters around.

On the Frosh roster.....I noticed Schwalbach......what grade is this young man? I know there is a 7th grade Schwalbach who has an extremely bright future.

PBR guy was there today (also scouts for Padres). He had Jones in the 82-83 range.

I liked what I saw of Jones the other day although you could tell it was early in the season. He does have a nice breaking ball but he was also hit pretty good too. I don't think he had a K in the 4 innings pitched. He will be fine this year and will keep getting better.

 

I think the issue with Highlands and a concern has to be their bats. They are 2-0 to start the season which is great, but I thought I heard Boone out hit them in that first game and I know Cooper out hit them 11-4 in the 4-3 win on Saturday.

 

They definitely have some kids with some good power, but you can't win a lot of games with 4 hits a game. I think they will get better, too good not to improve that area. Also as I said, can't be too upset with starting the season at 2-0 against 2 pretty good teams.

 

Highlands gets their bats going and with their very solid defense, well I can see them being a tough win in their district this year.
