January 26, 201412 yr Probably not the best-worded thread title but.... I eat out a lot and enjoy checking out the Cincinnati/NKY establishments. Is there a more overrated food category than Mexican? How much can you do with it? I went El Toro in Hyde Park last night. Nice place. Nice service. It's still just Mexican food though. My wife wanted to check it out and it was, again, OK. That's true of almost every Mexican place.
January 26, 201412 yr Not a Mexican food fan so I can't comment on the differences. But in the same category as that for you is BBQ places for me. They all are pretty much the same to me.
January 26, 201412 yr I'd eat Mexican every day and be perfectly content. Italian in the other hand.... You've had one Chicken Parmigiana, you've had them all. Only so many ways you can present pasta and sauce.
January 26, 201412 yr The difference between a good Mexican restaurant and a bad one: Whether or not they give complimentary chips and salsa. Chipotle and Qdoba don't count.

January 26, 201412 yr I've actually been to a Mexican place in Louisville where the first bowl of chips and salsa was free, but after that you had to pay for it... Really? That's half the reason people go to Mexican restaurants.
January 26, 201412 yr The distinguishing feature for a Mexican restaurant is their margueritas There is a restaurant in the east side of Frankfort, Garcias' that has a large marguerite that is the size of a kitchen sink...and it is good. My wife accused me of buying her one when I talked her into fostering a dog.

January 26, 201412 yr There is a huge difference between the Sol Aztecas/Las Aztecas and places of similar name and authentic Mexican food. Authentic Mexican places are much better. But if we are talking places like I mentioned above, it all hinges on how good their salsa is and how strong their Margs are.
January 26, 201412 yr For the most part, you're not going to get really good Mexican food around here anywhere. Pretty much everything around here is just ok Mexican food, some are a little better than others. In places like Houston, San Diego, San Antonio you can get incredible Mexican food. Everything is made from scratch including the tortillas. We're just not lucky enough to have it here.

But I agree, I've had some amazing Mexican food in the Southwest.
January 26, 201412 yr I love Mexican food. In Frankfort the best one is La Fiesta aka "The Mexican Monkey". Hands down the best food and service. Plus having the BIG 32 ounce Dos Equis Amber Draft in the frosted mug is fantastic too.
January 26, 201412 yr Not sure it's a "category" but I would say the chain buffets - Golden Corral, Ryan's, etc. Hogs at a trough.
