Not trying to poke fun at Latin as I've always been intrigued and fascinated by their school, and applaud them whenever their teams enjoy any success, but here's a bit of food for fodder related to their season thus far.

 

After 9 games they are 0-9

 

They're averaging 19.1 points per game, reaching their highest output in 3 different games this season with 25, their 4 lowest output games were 11,11,14, & 16.

 

The KHSAA.org site has them with 14 points in their loss against Newport, and the season average of 19.1 is based on that.

 

If they truly only scored 10 against Newport then their season average would be 18.6.

 

Their worst defeat came from a hard spanking from St. Francis losing 91-16.

 

Their opponents are averaging 66.7 points per game.

 

You could say that this is a rebuilding year for them after having lost the magnificent services of All Time Covington Latin Scorer Mitchell Blewitt to graduation.

 

In years past I know that Covington Latin has competed on the JV level. How do they determine if they're going to field a Varsity squad or not? Seems like it would be a tough decision to make.

Is it possible that in order to keep their KHSAA status, they have to compete at the Varsity level every so many years? Just asking.

Although there was about a 10 year period, I'm guessing, from about 2000-2010 where Latin did not partake in the 35th district tournament, I'm not aware of any years that they didn't field a varsity team. My memory of them goes back to around 1970, and I'm pretty sure that they've had a team every year since. Before 1970 ???, I cannot comment on their B-Ball history (although I'd love to know). That answer might be able to be provided by Mustang.

Cov. Latin may feel obligated to play in the All "A" since one of the founders of the tournament was Fr. Ed Heile back in the late 70's. Just a thought.

They should try to schedule a game with Burgin.

You could be right. I honestly don't know, although I do know that they haven't always participated in postseason play (which is why I assumed they didn't always have a varsity team).

I think a school like this would be much better suited to play in the KCAA and/or KCSAA. They would find schools/teams they could compete with and probably even win a few here and there. There will always be blowouts, but no one wants to do this night in and night out I wouldn't think, especially when other more reasonable options are available. Highlands Latin school in Louisville does it. They have almost 600 kids k-12, so decent size program. Average SAT 1888, average ACT 27...not too shabby. And they don't have to play J'town and Ballard to boot.

Nothing against the Wildcats at all. Just poking a little fun at them.

 

Newport kids don't need anyone poking fun at them, they have enough challenges. Your attempt at humor was just that a poor attempt.

Since you are not from around here, Covington Latin is an accelerated high school academic program where gifted kids can actually skip up to 2 years of middle school. Even though the kids are younger the average ACT score was 27.5 for the class of 2013. No one ever complains when they get an out of district student. Except maybe when David Justice went there. :lol2:

 

I don't get the whole desire to do that. I qualified b/c my Mom applied me, basically. It just seemed like a socially awkward setting. We had a kid on our team at Hanover that did the same thing. He had a VERY rough first couple years of college. He's very successful, but I find the balance between academics and social out of whack.

I'm with you! I had the opportunity to attend and my parents said no! I can't thank them enough for that decision. Why push a child into the real world earlier than necessary. A kid may be smart, but he may be mentally immature (as well as physically).

I had a neighbor who sent his child there and complained when he was roomed with a 6'5" 270 pound 19 year old in college. His son was 16 years old, about 5'6" and was lucky to break 100 pounds. His son has since graduated college and seems to be doing well, but I just see no need for it.

I took Mustang's humor as more of a pat on the back to the Latin kids than a jab at the Newport kids.

It is not for everyone and every parent and child who is interested potentially needs to examine their individual situation. There are many kids who are bored in grade school and welcome the challenge of the academics at Latin School. Are they better off being challenged at a younger age? I think yes (and no none of my four sons attended Latin School as their dad did) I am fine with that. I too would have been fine if they wanted to. They did not want to and I would not force them. I doubt many of their students are forced to attend.

 

Yes it can create some awkwardness in college, but it also prepares you in many ways to get more out of college and your education. It also allows you to possibly enter the work force two years earlier than others you age.

 

So, if the student is mature enough and can handle it, adjust to it - much more good can come of it then bad IMO
