The thing about Latin School is I could see them using that cheer against Cov Cath or any other school. It isn't about Newport IMO. I do agree though that it is a cheer I wouldn't use unless in response to some "trash talking" by the other cheering section.

I get the joke, I just don't think it is funny when said about kids who already have plenty of challenges. It is old and unoriginal at best. Furthermore, I don't take my cues from cheering sections at sporting events about what is appropriate and what is not.

I took Mustang's humor as more of a pat on the back to the Latin kids than a jab at the Newport kids.

Latin had that prolific scorer last year - his name was Mitchell Blewitt, I believe. Is he now - probably at age 16 or 17 - playing college basketball anywhere?

I wonder if the motivation for the super small schools to play these game are simply to share the gate from the All A?

I have read through the thread a couple times. Here is my take:

 

I think Mustang was trying to lift Cov Latin because of the lopsided score. C'mon, they only scored 10 points. And Cov Latin could have gotten that score against Cooper, Conner, St. Henry, Highlands, etc. And that comment about Newport could apply to those schools as well---when they play Cov Latin.

 

I don't think it was a jab/poke directed at Newport, and the kinds of challenges that they face each day. It was more a lifting up of Cov Latin and the lopsided score. And pointing out that in general, while athletics is not their stong suit, academics is.

 

People look at things from different angles.

 

Also---Mustang was not the poster who brought up that cheer, another poster did. And I don't believe that Mustang was leading anyone in that cheer---but this thread makes it sound like he was.

Just wanted to comment on Coach Snap. He is one of my favorites to watch. Love his passion, and the way he both gets after his boys and cares about them at the same time.

 

I saw a lot of :taz: going on when they played St. Henry. And I saw a lot of:clap: and :thumb:.

 

Great coach who deserves the recognition of helping Newport have a successful season.

He's a student at NKU majoring in Biochemistry. He's not playing ball, and I imagine that it's a smarter move on his part to consider his professional career instead of basketball, however he is quite a mature looking big kid for his age, and can't help but wonder how much more mature he'd be in a couple of years when he's a Junior in college at a normal Freshman age. I've never spoken to him personally so I have no idea if he's given any consideration of keeping the idea of ever playing again on the table. Be interesting to see, but no matter what good luck to him whatever he decides.

Post 70's I remember losing to them at St. Thomas Gym when they had Justice and I remember them beating us at Brossart as recently as our homecoming game in 1990 when we were 5-22 - the year prior to Coach Tom Creamer coming on board and beginning the great turnaround of Brossart basketball.

 

Perhaps pre-70's or thereabouts I remember a night at the Campbell County Middle School, where we played our home games, when Fr. Ed Heile was going for his 100th win. We beat them in triple-overtime. The most distraught person in the house was the photographer who was following Fr. Ed around to capture the moment of his winning his 100th. Apparently he knew that Brossart was their best chance, and that it might be weeks before they had another opportunity.

 

From 1960 through 1968 St. Mary/Brossart had a combined record of 33-151. Many of our wins during that era were Latin, Holy Family-Ashland, Tollesboro, and St. Rita School for the Deaf. I remember Silver Grove and St. Patrick being way too good for us. In 1963 we finally got a bona fide win over a "big school" - we beat Walton-Verona. It was our only win of the season.

 

I'm sure the Big Green Horse might be able to provide some W-L info about CovLatin pre-70's.

St. Mary became Bishop Brossart in 1961. This first winning season in the history of the program did not occur until 1968-69 when we went 20-7 under Don Fangman. It wasn't until 1974-75 that we had our second winning sesaon, going 21-11 under Tom Seither.

 

In the modern Seiter/Schlarman/Code era we haven't had a losing season since 1992-93 - twenty years.
