Since we are on the subject: do you care to share how you evaluate players? Not judging you, just wondering, do you base your voting on video, news outlets, word of mouth, do you do any research? I ask this knowing you are busy and would probably like to devote more time to evaluating players, but are limited in the time department.

 

 

Word of mouth from other coaches. That is where we started in 2005 when we picked our All Star Team that beat Tennessee two TDs. We also watched video of guys to narrow it down, but we started with what the coaches told us. For all state voting, most coaches have to go by word of mouth. We were still playing when I sent in my ballot. I want to do a good job with my vote. But with teaching, coaching, family, etc., it would be incredibly difficult to evaluate all those guys on video.

 

While there is always room for improvement, I like the different all state teams. I like the Class of the Commonwealth because it focuses on seniors. The Courier Journal has the coaches votes. The AP is the media. And a tremendous amount of effort goes into the BGPrep Team. I think all of them have a place.

 

And... I like the district player of the year from the Coaches Association. Our tailback, Rashon Nelson, won that award two years in a row. At the state level, the highest he has received so far has been honorable mention. But, he was the catalyst that made our team go these past two seasons and we won our district both years. I was glad he received that recognition.

 

At the college level they have different player of the year awards. I think we can improve what we have, but in the big picture, I think it is fine.

 

At the end of the day, scholarships will go to kids based on what the college coach sees on video.

 

I also hope that the Courier Journal, Mike Fields, etc. don't get discouraged with the criticism and quit doing their all state teams. The recognition is great for the kids and it promotes HS football during a time when the HS football season is over. The positives far outweigh the negatives.

Graves County had 2 kids on the second team and 6 Honorable Mention if I counted correctly. Mayfield had none! With that many kids making All State, how in the world did they get smoked by Mayfield and not win a state title? The Mayfield Messenger Sports Editor (Its a 1 man department) is a Graves guy. The papers coverage since he took over has been slanted toward Graves to the point I dropped it after many years. I smell a rat, I suspect he nominated the Graves kids and didn't nominate any from Mayfield. I think I will do a little investigating on this

That is the root of the problem with these type of awards and honors.

 

So far the best ones that are released each year are the all district and all class teams, simply because all the coaches have to participate. Any other type of honors that come out is nothing more than a crap shoot. Again I am not taking anything away fromt he kids named in these things, but it's tough to put a name like AP All State Team when in reality it isn't the best team the AP could put together. It was also mentioned how it is not very evenly done. The AP Writer for NKY has a ton of schools to cover but gets the same amount of nominations ans a AP writer for another area that only has just a couple teams to cover. When you have 10 nominations split between 2 or 3 schools is a lot easier to come up with names than if you have 10 nominations for 20+ schools.

I think kicker Sean Neurnberger, Oldham Co making HM is a travesty.

 

And kicker Tyler Pack, Johnson Central set a new state record for FG distance and did not even make HM. I know the controversy around the record setting FG, but he obviously is one of the best kickers in the state.

I cancelled mine yesterday.

I spoke to Rich Skinner about this and he said the entire process is a royal cluster. Lots of communication problems with the guy that now runs KY AP(3rd guy in 5 years). Rich can correct me if I misunderstood but I don't think any NKY kids got nominated due to the lack of communication with the guy that runs it. He is not sure if the Cincinnati Enquirer was even on the email distribution list. Tried a few times to get clarifications on when nominations were to be in. Didn't get a reply.

 

One more example of how these lists need to be taken with a grain of salt. Again, see the example of two of the top LBs in the country not being on the list.

 

I have also talked to the KY AP guy. There is a total lack of representation from NKY. I asked about becoming a voter given all the teams we see and it has fallen on deaf ears. Unbelievable.

There are three kickers named on the first two teams and multiple on the HM list. Surely the new state record holder could have, at least, been on the HM list. I'm pretty sure he was much more of a weapon then just one field goal.

With no intention of diminishing the achievements of any of these kids......... I did witness the state finals games and don't recall seeing the "all-star" team that must have been Graves Co. ? :idunno: Clearly there is a problem here........if it is obviously this flawed, please don't bother! All these kids (mentioned&omitted) deserve better.........

Looking at the list above really makes me realize how much of a joke this team has become. The only 2 Northern Kentucky kids that could get votes were the guy who was a candidate for Mr. Football and the other because he played for Highlands and threw for thousands of yards. The AP organization should be embarrased by the team that they put out in print for everyone to see. Maybe the best thing to do is wait until each AP outlet publishes their all star teams and then see if you can put together a list of deserving players based upon these selections. As far as I know, there have been no teams published in the Northern Kentucky papers as yet. The coaches have selected their teams I believe and maybe NKAC, but not sure.

In keeping with the ongoing tradition of "The best QB in Northern Kentucky", why don't we just have a Northern Kentucky All-State team? Of course it would really be a All-Northern Kentucky team, just don't tell anyone!!!! But really folks, its hard to put these list together and be on target across the board. I live in Jefferson County, I watched a little football this past season, but I cant tell you who the best 30 players are in the Louisville metro area.... There will always be super kids left off the list, its unfortunate. If there are 5 different All-State teams, so what. If that allows more kids the recognition they deserve, then so be it. If each "All-State Team" listed the criteria for selection, then maybe we can understand some of the selection process/results. I really don't think the process will change much. Good first lesson for young kids to know that life is not fair!!!!

This shows what one paper (Mayfield Messenger that I will call the Graves Messenger from now on), or should I say one sports editor, with a agenda can and did do. Not only did he just load the ballot with just Graves kids but he also did not nominate a single Mayfield kid. He shows up at late at Mayfield games sometimes wearing Graves clothing and does not give Mayfield the same due in the paper he gives Graves. I guess this latest move should not surprise me. I never would have imagined it would come to this. I am glad I dropped them last year due to their bias

Who nominated the NKY players to be on the ballot to vote? If each outlet gets 10 players to nominate from their area, to me this means that one/two did not nominate a player(s) from their area.
