That's just hitting below the belt. Of course, at his advance age, he wears his belt pretty high.

You are correct. I talked to Joe Ford a few weeks ago and that game came up. There was snow on the ground. Madisionville was very good those two seasons and Sonny Collins should be listed as one of Kentucky's all time great running backs in high school.

 

 

If I remember correctly, way back then it only took two wins in the playoffs to reach the State Championship game. In both trips to the 2A Championship Game in 1970 & 1971, Madisonville beat Elizabethtown in the semi-finals. The Big 8 champ (Madisonville, Owensboro) would play the WKC (Mayfield, Hop-town, Paducah) Champ in the opening round. I don't remember the other conferences, just playing E-Town in the semis both years. In 1973 the Maroons lost to Tilghman in the first round 2-0. By the time I reached high school in 1975 all that had changed.

 

Except for one great team in 1983 (10-0 regular season, lost to Owensboro 3-6 in first round of playoffs) the Maroons have never come close to reaching those glory years of 1969 - 1973.

It ceased being a high school in1981 and became a middle school.

The Dickenson system was sort of confusing but I think the basic premise was teams earned points by beating or losing to a team based on that teams record.

 

So for example and these are not accurate values........

 

If your team beats a team with a winning record they got 30 points

If your team beats a team with a losing record they got 20 points

If your team lost to a team with a winning record they got 15 points

If your team lost to a team with a losing record they got 10 points.

 

I don't remember what happened if a team won or lost to a 5-5 team. I don't remember tie-breakers.

It had a short existence but it was a major player in footbal and basketball and was a big rival of its neighbor Seneca HS in those days.
