Can you name the year? (without looking it up)

 

I can't, but I love this stuff. Thanks 2C. I would guess late 60's / early 70's..

 

I will go with 1972.

^ Argh. That was my guess.

 

So I'm guessing 1973 just to stay in this thing.

 

My reasoning is this: Trinity beat Butler in the title game in one of those two years and in this poll they're both ranked in the top three.

Trinity was the city champ, Butler was the county champ.

This was back when the Dickensen System determined all playoff spots

I would have guessed late 60s myself because of Lynch and because Trinity and Flaget both were in 3A. I have no idea when Trinity began and when Flaget ceased.

 

Class 3A was all Louisville/Jefferson Co teams at that time, right? And everybody else was lumped into the other two classes I think.

 

Seems like a pretty tough row to hoe in any of those classes.

Trinity opened in 1953. Flaget closed in -- I believe -- 1974.

 

And you're right, 3A was all Jefferson County at the time. City champ vs. County champ in the title game... which is a hilarious way to do things.

 

It would be OUTSTANDING (and hilarious) if the format of the LIT in basketball was changed so that one bracket was county teams and the other was city teams and the two winners met in the championship.

Here's how I guessed it. In 1970, I was in the 6th grade, my sister was a cheerleader for Mayfield and Mayfield had one of it's all time great teams, some old timers say the best. Mayfield had David Fowler and Joe Ford, Madisonville had Sonny Collins , Larry Jones and their QB was Brad Fabel (PGA Tour). Mayfield suffered greatly when Fowler went down with a knee injurie and was beaten in the 2nd half. I saw the ranking and knew it had to be around 1970.....I remember that game like yesterday, watching the game on the sideline.

 

 

Also back then getting into the playoffs was very tough and you played tough teams from the get go. The old was WKY conference was a tough league and if you won that thing it meant you had a very good team.

Alfred (Sonny) Collins was a Jr. on that team, first of two straight Runners-up finishes. I think that Maroon team also lost to Highlands in the first game of the year (Rec Bowl). Collins broke his ankle in the first game of his Sr. season (1971) and missed the entire year.

Didn't Mayfield beat Madisonville the previous year (1969) in Mayfield when it was bitterly cold. Collins missed the game with an eye injury he suffered in the last regular season game against Daviess County. I was a 4th grader and didn't make the trip, but my brother was in the band. I just remember him talking about how cold it was that night!

You are correct. I talked to Joe Ford a few weeks ago and that game came up. There was snow on the ground. Madisionville was very good those two seasons and Sonny Collins should be listed as one of Kentucky's all time great running backs in high school.
