Kentuckians and WKY, EKY, NKY, etc...

Reading the football thread talking about state playoff venues got me to thinking. I will also relay a funny story that kind of got me on the subject as well.

I used to be in men's softball BIG time up till a few years ago. Me and a buddy were playing up in the Lexington area years back, I had just moved to Frankfort from Murray, he lives in Crittenden County (I know some of you will probably have to look that one up...well I know DreamKiller won't have to, haha...by the way Dream killer, just for you, I've played many a basketball game over in Fredonia). Anyway, we are playing ball, and a guy asks my buddy where he is from. Well, knowing chances are slim to none the guy knows where Crittenden Co. is, he just says "Oh I'm from over in Western Ky". Guy replies..."Oh, Elizabethtown". Buddy says "No, further that that". Guys replies "Oh, Leitchfield"? Buddy replies "Oh no, lot further that that, over by Paducah". Guy looks at him totally confused, shrugs his shoulders and walks off.

I have been asked many a time through the years where I went to school (college) or where I lived before I moved to the Central KY area. Many many times, when I say Murray, I get a complete blank look and then asked "Where is that". Do others not find that strange? I mean Murray State is a major university in this state...and people don't know where it is?

Maybe I have become blinded over the years since a large part of my job requires me to travel and there are very few places I haven't been. For instance, I will be in Williamsburg Wednesday for work. But I find it strange how little a LOT of people know about the general geography of this state, at least in relation to where cities/counties are located. This may not be the case as much o this board, but I sure see it a lot out there in general. Do any of you see the same?

Where ever we go and get asked where we are from, Mr. lawildcat always says "Cincinnati" and I go crazy! He says it's easier than saying "northern Kentucky" because then we'd have to explain that it's right outside of Cincinnati, etc. Sorry Ohioans, but I do not want people to think I am from that crazy city!

I hear ya BigVMan, the blank stares are classic!!! Some folks just don't get around, let alone read a little bit.

I have a book that was published about 35 years ago, its about 200 pages and it has a map of KY with the county seats for each county listed. Also, it has about a page of info for each county, when it was incorporated, what county/counties they were formed from, rank in size, famous sons/daughters, landmarks, etc.

Everyone know that there are only two geographic locations in all of Kentucky:

1) Louisville

2) Out in the State

You are not far off. I think outside of the major population, north-central Kentucky area, many have no clue about the rest of the state. Could also be a major generalization on my part. So those outside take an interest elsewhere because they always have to. You always have to drive across the state to get to anything so you see all of Kentucky.

Don't forget Ohi...er...Northern Kentucky.

The main reason this is the way it is, BigVMan23, is because Kentucky is an intensely provincial state where people have very little curiosity about what goes on outside of what's right in front of their faces. It's also why we have 120 counties when we really only need about half that many.

Never mind, not relative

So, I'm assuming your talking about EKY.

Bigman love WKy and Murray State! Daughter met her husband there and had a wonderful time in Murray and the University in her four years living there. BTW they nailed one shoe each, to the tree!

I too laugh and remember I am a NKy person, when I hear people take about WKY, meaning Bowling Green and little Leitchfield, which was just about half way to Murray from my home in NKy!

BigVMan yes I've seen what you are talking about. True story-I use to travel a lot & had a flight into Cincinnati from Las Vegas. The pilot came on after we landed & said 'Welcome to Northern Ky' the guy sitting beside me about lost it saying 'I got on the wrong plane I was supposed to go to Cincinnati.' I explained he was on the correct flight & he said, "I never knew the Cincinnati airport was in Ky."

:lol2:

You know, I was dating a woman from southeastern Kentucky several years ago and used that phrase above... "out in the state." You'd have thought I insulted her grandmother by name. I was instructed never to use the expression in her presence again.

I've lived in Henderson my entire life and don't know much about EKY. As a matter of fact hadn't been past Lexington until the late 90's when my father in law was assigned to the Ashland area as a DS for the Methodist church. I visited once, nice town but was bored to tears. Luckily the British open was on so spent most of the time watching that.

Leitchfield....the claim to fame is the last exit with any food for a LONG time. :D

I'm fortunate, I suppose. While most of my family is located in Leitchfield/Clarkson/Hardinsburg/Rough River area, I have family all over. I remember trips to Cromona (sp) in the dead of winter to visit my Uncle Kermit and Aunt Freda.

And was our lunch/dinner rest stop, many a time to and back home from Murray State! :thumb:

Only wish our Daughter and our Son-in-law were so close now!

Boise, Idaho :arghh: is a tab farther than Murray, Ky was to visit them!
