When I was in high school, the only places to eat were Druthers, Hardee's, and Mr. Gatti's. The dining scene has definitely grown in 30 years.

 

As an aside...the trip from Louisville to Evansville offers NOTHING in the way of decent dining on the way. And yea....I know it's not as far as NKY to Murray....but I get hungry! LOL

You are not far off. I think outside of the major population, north-central Kentucky area, many have no clue about the rest of the state. Could also be a major generalization on my part. So those outside take an interest elsewhere because they always have to. You always have to drive across the state to get to anything so you see all of Kentucky.

Going to UK, when I'd ask someone where they were from, these are some of the common cities:

 

Louisville

Lexington

 

Northern Kentucky (never specific, only Northern Kentucky, so it could be quite a few towns... if you ask them "what part" you are just as likely to get "beside Cincinnati" as you are Erlanger, Newport, Covington, Alexandria, Florence, etc.)

 

Bowling Green

Owensboro

Paducah

Hop-town (most likely said "Hop-town", or maybe "Hopkinsville")

Campbellsville

Murray (could go in the next list too depending on Murray State or Murray High, but probably here)

Winchester

Richmond

Georgetown (may say Scott County too though)

Frankfort

Ashland

 

 

Smaller towns you'll likely get the name of (probably because of the association with the High School in many cases):

 

Danville (if they went to Danville; "Boyle County" is an ~50/50 shot otherwise)

Harrodsburg

Corbin

Harlan

Hazard

Pikeville

That's where I was going. From my travels and experience Kentucky is the only state that I know of that people will tell you where they are from by naming the county.

 

If you ask me where I'm from:

1) if its local I'll say Sunfish

2) if its in the state I'll say Edmonson County (or 30 miles north of Bowling Green if they don't know where EC is)

3) if it out of the state I'll say near Mammoth Cave

While there was some cursing....mostly it was cruising and good times. . Yes...I remember cruising. It was pretty much the only thing to do.

I've always been really good with directions and knowing where other cities were in relation to where I was. It always surprises me that so many people are completely clueless to the geography of their own state. I've lived in Louisville for nine years now, and I have several buddies who have never lived anywhere else, and I can navigate the city better than them.

Since I've moved to the Highlands, I've gotten terrible. If my office was on Bardstown Road, I'd never leave the neighborhood.

I remember having a Kentucky Geography class in middle school where we had to learn all 120 counties and be able to label them on a map, I think we got 1 point for every county we got correct...very few got any bonus points for going over 100 counties correct. Teacher actually taught a skill that is diminishing more and more every day, the ability to read a road map. He would give us two random points in Ky and we would have to right down turn by turn directions along with the mileage traveled on each road. Sad thing is that the only place some people have ever seen a road atlas these days is in their dad or grandpa's car.

Everyone know that there are only two geographic locations in all of Kentucky:

1) Louisville

2) Out in the State

 

3 geographic regions in Kentucky

1) Southern Ohio

2) Southern Indiana

3) Gods Country

I have noticed that with most of my friends. It always amuses me when people talk aboit being afraid to go to anything on main street because it is "downtown" and dangerous. So funny.
