It was never meant to be insulting. Truthfully, it's just something I picked up... maybe as a kid. There's Louisville and then there's whatever it is that happens outside the Gene Snyder Freeway. I'm very fond of Eastern Kentucky. My grandfather on my mom's side was born in a very small town in Floyd County and I've visited a couple times. Really beautiful place.

 

It's a shame there's not much left of what it was now. One of my mom's brothers has said more than once that if he had a time machine, he'd take all his kids and all the cousins to Hi Hat in the early 1960s. Said there was just no way to understand how much he loved what that place used to be like.

I feel ya, I know everyones post was just for good fun and all for smiles. I just had to post that based on how many Kentuckians actually feel that way about EKY. They think it gives the rest of the state a bad name and refuse to give most East Kentuckians the time of day. My response was in regards to those types. I know you all were just playing around.

I gotta be honest...there're are just as many misconceptions from people "out in the state" about Louisville and Louisvillian's. You'd think this was the most dangerous city on Earth, that it's entirely unnavigable (is that a word?), that we're all uppity, that we're all doomed to an after-life in hell...I've heard a lot.

Yep... "Out in the Staters" talk bad about Louisville on the regular. Having never been here.

I gotta be honest...there're are just as many misconceptions from people "out in the state" about Louisville and Louisvillian's. Other than it being referred to by most as the "big city", I haven't really heard that many people around here trash Louisville outside of their basketball team. :lol:

 

 

For the most part growing up everyone was pretty fond of Louisville and other areas in the state. I do not doubt there are some though who share the opinions you mentioned. I just haven't heard it personally.

If I'm out of state and asked where I'm from I'm one of those who say "Cincinnati Area". Around the state I say Northern Kentucky. Always have.

All the terrible, frightening things that people outside the city are so concerned about come absolutely true for one week a year in early May. All the drinking, gambling, and promiscuity that the good preachers in those small country churches warned you about is not only tolerated but actively encouraged by the local government and business community. Forget the infield at Churchill Downs; just a glance into the Tiki Room at Phoenix Hill Tavern is enough to warrant a trip to the confessional.

 

Of course, we wouldn't have it any other way...

I'm gonna have to disagree with that point. My experiences has taken me all across this state, with extensive time spent in EKy and SEKy, and I have found the general overall attitude toward Louisville is that of revision, as though it is some place to be avoided like the plague because of all its "big-city" problems. The interesting contrast is that of Lexington as some sort of Mecca just because of the college hoops team that resides there. Trust me, I've lived in Lexington and it's got its ugly side just like every other large city.

"Let's not get hasty on descriptors for Lexington like 'large city'."

A branch to this discussion, if you are abroad and ask where someone is from, they will say China, Kenya, Brazil, etc. However, if you are an American, you just simply say what state you are from, people find that more interesting. So I would always say, "I am from Kentucky." The response was always, "oh, Kentucky Fried Chicken; I bet you eat a lot of it." I then proceed to vomit.

 

I had a friend of mine from overseas joke with me about it, asking me if I get a discount at KFC. I got a kick out of it.

When I was younger I had a cousin move here from Santa Barbara and she came from a fairly well do background. I was only ten or eleven, she had to be sixteen or seventeen. Anyway, I remember her saying that there was people out there in California where she lived who thought we didn't even wear shoes. She was like yeah when I got here I was amazed because people said that you all didn't wear shoes or anything.

 

Then I remember her going to the movies with my mother and I (around same age) and it was when the movie Clueless came out. The part where they make the comment about getting married young and having kids and she says something like "what if this isn't Kentucky". I saw a big smile and chuckle from my cousin she obviously thought it was the funniest thing. The rest of the movie theater was not as amused.

I live in county that many people can't find on the map and many others can't pronounce. Our Chamber of Commerce even produced a really cute video about the mispronunciations a few years back. It's Garrard County!
