In the beginning of the Six-Class System it seemed as if the same teams were going to win every year. This year seen some success by teams that have not previously won State Championships, or teams that accomplished more then has been seen by their program in the first portion of the Six-Class System.

 

1A saw Williamsburg win the first ever Regional Championship and make their first ever appearance in the State Championship Game. Raceland won their first ever Regional Championship and made their first ever appearance in the State Semi-Finals.

 

2A saw DeSales defeat yearly favorite Newport Central Catholic and saw the superior performance by Caldwell County.

 

3A saw Belfry get their third ever State Championship and win the game that has belonged to Central the last several years. Also Wayne County made it to the State Championship game with Bourbon County, Mason County and South Warren had great runs.

 

4A saw a school that has only existed for four years beat a program that has owned their class for a long time - Highlands. Johnson Central, Covington Catholic, Russell County, Boyle County all had good years.

 

6A saw a school that has been on the edge of success in the playoffs for several years finally get their Championship. Powerhouses Trinity and St. Xavier had the most competition they have seen in years by in-state teams.

 

5A still to come.

 

Did 2013 validate the reasons for the Six-Class System? Did this year show that many teams ARE able to compete with the perennial powers in the various classes?

In my mind, no. It is great that so many teams get opportunities- I am a fan of giving young people opportunities to experience success. The population of the state still does not justify 6 classes, IMO. No team's success will make me change my mind on this.

If it happens again next year, then I'll say.... maybe.

 

Though I agree with born2reign, there aren't enough teams for it. But from a positive effect standpoint, if next year proves competitive at the final level again, maybe.

I don't think it validates having 6 classes because some different teams won or had good seasons. We could go to 15 classes and have 15 finals decided in the last 2 minutes and it would not validate having that many classes with the number of teams KY has.

I have gone back and forth on this. At this point, and I could change my mind tomorrow, I like 6 classes, but taking the top 2. 6 classes because football is a numbers driven game and that is the best means at this time to let schools compete against schools most like themselves.

On the super district....maybe in 6A you take top 4.

 

I like one less week of playoffs also to get the season out of the heat by one more week. Rule changes are moving us in that direction.

I changed my mind. The 2015-2016 alignment did it. 3 team districts. Coming in 5th and becoming the 4 seed in another district. The travel and difficulty in scheduling.

 

I now favor 4 classes and taking the top 4.

Here is the biggest issue I have with 6 classes. It's when you can't fill all the districts they create. Anytime you have 3 teams making up a district then you have problems.

 

People complain about 4 teams per district making the playoffs and then you create 3 team districts, it's a joke. I like having at least 5 team districts but they can't even do that right, instead they have areas that have 2 3 team districts instead of combing them just so the can have a set amount of districts across the state.

 

That is my biggest complaint.

Especially when you have 6 schools all within a 30 mile radius from eachother, give or take a few miles, then put them in one district and make it competitive.

Are you proposing 4 six team 6A districts with only the top 4 moving on to the playoffs?
