Did the 2013 Season Validate the Six-Class System?

Featured Replies

KHSAA fails anytime they make 3 team districts.

The ADs, Principals, and Coaches voted to keep 6 classes and take the top 4 on a survey done last year of all schools. The KHSAA was trying to give them what they wanted. Maybe the next time there is a vote or survey, 4 classes and take the top four will win out. I hope so.

I came here to make this exact post.

Not enough teams in KY to sustain a 6 class system and keep the level of play very competitive.

Go back to 4 classes.

4 classes and only take the top 2 in my opinion.

I have no problem with taking the top 4 because 4 classes would mean 6 team districts etc.

I just don't like 3 team districts. Makes no sense at all. KHSAA really does a pretty good job at screwing things up IMO.

I don't have a problem with 6 classes if it's done correctly. No one will ever convince me why there should be 2 3 team districts all in the same area in the same class. That is just stupid. If it is to keep the number of districts state wide then screw the number of,districts, I'd rather have an uneven number if it means making the regular season count for something.

You will never convince me it's fair to districts that have more than 4 teams and the 5th may be better than any team in a 3 team district who doesn't get in the playoffs while 3 and 4 team districts send everyone.

In 6A, everybody goes. It could be Seneca and PRP playing for the NKY title in 2015 if Marksbury and friends convince the KHSAA to skip rotation of districts.

Why doesn't anyone ever say 5 classes? It seems like the argument is always either 4 or 6.

What if it stayed at 6 classes but you make 1A and 6A 24 schools instead of 32? Put some byes in the early round playoffs to make it work.

I am with you as far as byes goes. I have never understood why you couldn't have 3 teams go to playoffs for example and have #1 seed with a bye week 1 of post season.

And I think this new alignment may finally bring the demise of the six class system in Kentucky. I know the KHSAA wants it, and they sold it by saying "the coaches and AD's voted for it". But, after this last alignment, I see many coaches changing their minds next time they are surveyed.

No. Three was plenty. It worked well from 1959-1974. Four was OK. 6 is ridiculous. Crowning 6 Champions in one sport in the Commonwealth is a bit much. Only New Jersey crowning 22 football Champions is more ludicrous.

Probably because many on here grew up with the 4 class system.

22? Wow.

To be fair, they call them state champions in New Jersey, but they are actually broken up by regions. So they'll have a AAAA-Region 4 Champion and that counts as a state champion. They do the same with private schools, so add it all up and you get a huge number like 22.
