Did he not shoot much?

13-0 to start game and 15-3 after one. Drew McDonald might have grabbed the first 13 rebounds of the game or maybe it just seemed like it.

NCC balanced inside and outside. Hatton was Dixie's only offensive threat and did not shoot the 3 much.

So the now famous "supporting cast" had 21 points combined? NewCath is awesome, but this was even more lopsided than I thought. I may have had Dixie too high at 7th....and they most assuredly aren't 3rd.

 

For about 5 reasons, sadly, I don't think we'll see the real Hatton at any point this season. A shame too, after a tremendous career.

 

I hope Front of the Rim stops by....

 

Like I mentioned in State Top 25 thread, NewCath was too low. Their starting 5 is AWESOME.

Hatton had 14 to be Dixie's leading scorer. 6 from the field and 8 from the stripe. I think he only attempted a few threes but didn't make any. He missed a few at the rim.

 

Niehaus got in foul trouble. Picked up his 4th early in the 3rd. Not much inside game from Dixie in general. It'll come around but starting the season against NCC when your team isn't 100% it's tough.

Dixie - Hatton 14, all in the 2nd half and 8 or 10 on free throws.

 

The Breds start with 6-6 Ben Weyer, 6-7 Drew McDonald, & 6-8 Jake Schulte, Zach Pangallo, & Tanner Moeves.

 

As the scores for each quarter would indicate Dixie could not "buy" a basket, as the 3 Breds big men were altering shoots all night long. Tanner Moeves with some "solid D" on Hatton tonight, and the Breds overall "D" was very good. A very few mental mistakes throughout the game for the Breds. The Breds missed at least 10 free throws in this one, need to cut that in half, but hey it's only game one.

 

B. Hatton was hounded all night long by both the Moeves brothers, if this what we can expect for the rest of the year....WOW!!!! IMO, BHatt was going 100%, like what was posted in the update thread. I really think the "D" gets the credit in holding him to a low scoring night.

 

NewCath will be back in action next Tuesday night at Dayton. This will be a district seeding game (the 1st time ever that this district has seeded).

Dixie's coaching was lost. They were heard cussing at one another on the bench. NCC had this game won in the summer when their coach was diligently getting scrimmage time against NKU players, Holmes players, etc...

 

Dixie head coach's first substitution was a 5-for-5, and it was not because he was upset with the 5 on the floor. NCC had a nice, tight 7-man rotation. Dixie was all over the place with subbing. They ran ZERO offense. No rhythm.

 

Why Dixie does not play Mitch Bolin more is beyond me? He definitely deserved way more minutes than he was given.

Congrats to the Breds, this looks like it was total domination.

 

They most likely have the best starting 5 in the Region and a likely POY candidate in McDonald.

Who shutdown Hatton defensively because holding him to 14 pretty much is shutting him down.

Basketball, Boys:

Newport Central Catholic 66, Dixie Heights 35:

This one was thought to be a tight battle between two 9th Region contenders.

But the host Thoroughbreds dominated from start to finish in the season opener for both teams.

NewCath had balanced scoring with three players in double figures. Drew McDonald led the way with 18 points with Zach Pangallo scoring 14 and Ben Weyer 11 to go with eight rebounds. Senior Jake Schulte followed with eight points and 13 rebounds.

The Moeves brothers also had good debuts for NewCath. Tanner Moeves scored eight and Grant Moeves had seven.

NewCath held Dixie Heights senior standout Brandon Hatton to 14 points. The University of Vermont commit did not score any points in the first half.

All was not perfect for the Thoroughbreds. They made just 18-of-33 free throws for 55 percent compared to 15-of-23 for 65 percent for the Colonels.

NewCath does not play again for a week. The Thoroughbreds travel to Dayton to open 36th District play. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
