Mr. Foster has brought this up on more than one occasion at various meetings and I think all schools should address this issue. Some parents obviously get it, while others continue to "carry on" an really make the school look bad. Got no problem with someone yelling, "bad call blue" or something along those lines, but to continue to yell and scream is more than enough. Unfortunately EVERY school has those fans that fit into this category, hopefully the learn to tone it down.

 

It's like I tell my daughters....When you wear anything with NewCath on it and you are out in public you are a walking billboard for this school and all it stands for. Plus you represent yourself, your parents, the teachers and most importantly all of the alums that have made this institution what it is.

 

Like Mr. Foster always says, "the reason NewCath was built on top of this hill, so everyone has to look up to us".

I tell my players this all the time, except with our school name entered. I will say this: I've watched NCC p[lay several times in quite a few sports over the past couple of seasons, and I've never heard anything objectionable.

Witnessed a coach address a boisterous parent one time using the following technique ... he sent the athlete/daughter into the stands with the following message: " Coach said you have a lot to say to us and the referee ... so I have sit with you for the rest of the half so I can accurately relay the message. That way you won't have to yell it anymore." Parent was thoroughly embarassed and a little upset his daughter was missing playing time.

 

Witnessed a second one during a summer league b-ball game. After 5-10 minutes of a fan yelling in the stands, the ref turned to the lady and handed her his whistle and sat down. His partner played along and made the lady come onto the floor to ref. The minute she stepped on the floor the crowd joined in and started booing. Needless to say she was thoroughly embarassed. Not a peep the rest of the season.

 

Unfortunately it seems that some have to be thoroughly embarassed before they change their behavior. Ironic thing is they are usually embarassing themselves and those sitting around them when they are yelling in the first place ... they just don't realize it. Having to manage spectators has to be one the most difficult parts of any coach or administrator's job. Obviously the examples above might be tough to implement in a HS game environment but does anybody have any other creative ways to help coaches/administrators manage the stands?

I think the passion of the student/parents/alum/teachers/administration is 2nd to none. Amazing to me how a 1A school will have a bigger fan base than a 6A with only a third of the students. Now with that said I've seen that passion turn into anger towards referees when they think their kids are getting the raw end of the deal. But what I'll say is this, the obnoxious fan happens at every school some more than others but what I don't see happening at every school is that passion. How many schools have you seen a teacher get up in front of the student cheering section and lead a cheer? Or a principle that has a parent meeting to address parent behavior? Not many if any at all. Got to love the Big C and Mr. Patterson. :thumb:

I only attended one game at NCC last year, the CovCath game, and I didn't see anything that caught my attention. That game was as passionate and as close as a game can be, and NewCath came out on the short end, and I still didn't see much in the way of rowdy fans. Now keep in mind I had Clyde nearby, with LB13 not far, and Mike Listerman in a red sweater vest behind me a few rows, so the galaxy of stars that surrounded me were a bit blinding. My son was with me and there wasn't one time I heard a word uttered that caught my attention, at least that was within ear shot.

 

Have to agree with you on that game. It was exciting and fun game to watch and when it was over, there were only handshakes, pats on the back and good luck down the road from each fans group to the other.

Wow!!! Good for Mr Foster. He obviously knows what he is talking about because he was probably principal when they built that school up on the hill...LOL

 

I agree with others, every school has them and I am as guilty as any but I too realize that I represent my school, my family and myself.:thumb:

 

As to the question how can a 1A school have so many fans? NewCath parents and student atheletes support each and every sport whether they have a kid playing that sport or not. I had a daughter go to NewCath and I can tell you the support is off the charts for such a small school and so are the winning results.

 

FWIW, my school sits on top of a hill as well...exactly 151 ft higher than my Christian neighbors...Just sayin

I've never heard an official complain about going to NCC in regards to fans.

I have been in every gym in NKY and fans are pretty much the same at every school. I think basketball lends itself to everyone being an "official" because everyone is close to the floor and nearly everyone "knows" the rules of the game.

 

Baseball/softball no one can see balls and strikes from the stands. Football fans are too far away and most penalties come from an area that the ball is not in. Volleyball no fans watch the net and the ball that is in or out is going very fast. But basketball..........everyone thinks they can see the travel or the foul on the way to the basket or the over-the back on a rebound.

I really don't think many, if any, refs scratch NCC. Refs usually scratch teamd because of coaches, not fans. Some people don't realize it but good refs tune out the fans.

I have talked to officials that have scratched NCC because of the fans.

It amazes me how really nice calm people turn into a whole totally different person when the child is playing. I married my present wife when my step daughter was in middle school and she played MS basketbal. I went to the game and my calm, never raise her voice type of woman went absolutely crazy when they called a foul on my step daughter (she decapitated someone). My wife stood up, her face got red, and she was screaming at the official. I grabbed her arm and said "she fouled her big time and if you are going to act like that I am not going to sit anywere near you again. Also, if the principal comes over here and throws you out, and he might, I am going to tell him not to let you attend any more games." She looked at me and just sat down and never said a thing the rest of her remaining five years of playing. I told her just grab my arm when you get angry. Reall, I had bruises on my arm after some games.
