Ensworth (TN) Coach Ejected - Misses State Championship Game

Featured Replies

Not sure how he got ejected as the film doesn't show what happened but....

His QB was trying to run off clock and ran OOB . He was shoved into a wall by a Brentwood player. Heck ensued. BA player was ejected and somehow the Ensworth coach was ejected. He will have to miss next week's state championship game.

Is there any type of appeals process or is the suspension final?

Good question. No clue. My guess is it can be reviewed especially if there is film. Without film he's out of luck.

Tough break...

Makes you wonder if he put his hands on the player that shoved his quarterback?

That's a good possibility. That will get you kicked quick.

You know, this is the 2nd time in a couple of weeks I've read about a coach getting ejected from a high school game. This does not happpen in college or pro's, yet we allow these clowns to teach our kids.

PS, don't really care the circumstances. If the head coach can't keep his composure, how can you expect the kids to keep theirs?

Notice the comments in the article. Flag was thrown on coach after game had concluded. Interesting how it relates to KHSAA direction earlier this season.

From what I gather there was contact between the coach and the official . Some say he was just trying to get past the official. The official apparently thought otherwise.

My guess is that there's an appeals process with the State's Athletic Association. If there's no appeals process there, he'll try to go to court.

I spoke with a retired TN high school referee yesterday. He retired about 8 years ago after 17 years of service. He told me they were always told that when the horn sounds they were to leave the field immediately. Under no circumstances were they to linger on the field or talk with a coach. Also, they were told to not attempt to break up a fight. Just stand back, take note of # of players involved. Breaking up scuffles was the responsibility of coaches and/or school officials. Apparently, a referee was involved in a law suit at the end of his career from pulling a kid from a scuffle. The kid claimed injury from the referee's actions and sued the TSSAA.

FOX 17 Exclusive: Ensworth head coach Ricky Bowers ejected after win - WZTV FOX 17 - Sports Unlimited

Here is a link to the video of the ejection. You can hear the official say "you're bumping me" and Coach Bowers responds with "I am not bumping you" and is then thrown out of the game.

From the looks of things IMO Coach Bowers was trying to get by the official, he wasn't making eye contact or being argumentative. The official seemed to be the aggressor here. Almost like he wanted to do it...saying "You're out of here! You're done for next week!"

Wow... After seeing that video, that official was definitely looking to do that. Nothing I saw there warranted even a penalty, much less an ejection. Official on a power trip, IMO. Hopefully there is an appeals process, so that coach can continue with his team.

It does say Ensworth can appeal the ruling, and I think this will be (or at least SHOULD be) over turned.

It would be interesting to see the 10-15 seconds prior to the video clip they showed. Did the Ensworth coach approach the official, what was said, etc.? Without that, based on the video shown, the ejection looks to be absolutely ridiculous. I hope they can appeal that and allow him to continue with his team.
