November 21, 201312 yr The Bettis/pot thread got me to thinking. I saw several people mention the fact that the # of people who smoke pot, evidently somewhat regularly, is much higher than some would think. If so, what would that percentage be? I mean, I'm thinking far far more people DON"T smoke pot than do, but maybe I just live in Dan's dreamworld where I think it's the 1950's and most people just don't do that. I dated a girl in the late 90's who turned out was a regular user. That was so far out in left field for me that I just couldn't perceive there were that many people who sat on their couch and rolled a couple of joints for "happy hour" multiple nights of the week. I STILL can't fathom that many people do it. And I know there is a huge drug problem in our society, I know about the violence, etc. going on in the world, I don't live with my head in the sand...but as far as the "regular everyday Joe and Jill"...are they actually firing one up more than I ever thought? I can tell you it don't happen in my house, but the more I hear it talked about...am I maybe the ONLY house in the neighborhood not doing it?
November 21, 201312 yr You would be surprised at how many "normal" every day, hard working and otherwise law abiding people smoke marijuana. Most people just don't advertise it.
November 21, 201312 yr You would be surprised at how many "normal" every day, hard working and otherwise law abiding people smoke marijuana. Most people just don't advertise it. I think there are a lot of closet stoners out there too, I just can't see the general population being any where near what Bettis says the NFL is or even any where close to even 50% Only 19% of adults over 18 smoke cigarettes, I can't imagine that the % smoking marijuana is more that cigarettes.
November 21, 201312 yr I don't know if you can accurately estimate how many people use marijuana regularly. How many people that do are willing to say so publicly? (Though 38% say they've tried it). But, views on it have changed pretty dramatically. Most people believe it should be legal now, which means it's probably considered a bit more normal than you think/expect it is. That number also rises to 67% among those between 18 and 30 and to 62% between 30 and 50. It's probably only a matter of time before marijuana is treated much like alcohol, and maybe viewed a little more favorably. For First Time, Americans Favor Legalizing Marijuana
November 21, 201312 yr Why would it be viewed more favorably? Not arguing just asking. I would guess because of health reasons (medicinal benefits of marijuana, liver/kidney damage with alcohol), alcoholism, and the general behavior of the people under their influences.
November 21, 201312 yr Author Yes Well, at least Crash gave me a straight, no beating around the bush answer.:lol2:
November 21, 201312 yr Author If it was legal, I'd first in line. But it's not, so I'm not. And why would that be? Just wondering.

November 21, 201312 yr I would say I am somewhere in between where you are and what the Bettis' thread indicated. I think a lot of it has to do with associations. Your circle of friends and family may not partake. Or if you do have some around you that do partake, they just do not let it be known to you because they know you do not use or may not approve.
November 21, 201312 yr I know of several self employed people who smoke it on the regular. It's not for everybody and I agree that the circle of people your around has some affect on occasional user. While I'm not going to go home and toke up on the regular, but you put me at Riverbend during a concert and night falls you never know what might happen.
November 22, 201312 yr Some random thoughts. When I was in law enforcement I was amazed at just how prevalent pot was among people. I am stretching this to make a point but I remember thinking there was pot under every rock I turned over. And that was mostly personal use pot for people that were out and about. And if that many people were carrying pot imagine how many additional people were smoking it at home. Switching gears, the topic came up with someone at my gym lately and the professional I was talking to said it isn't his thing but he has a handful of very successful professional friends that get high 3 or 4 nights a week.
