Massive 747 Lands at Tiny Airport, Gets Stuck There

"It is not presently known why the plane landed at the smaller airport but it appears to have been a mistake."

That seems fairly obvious.

Makes me think Homer Simpson "D'oh"

I just saw one of the planes at the Boeing facility in Charleston, SC during a tour a couple of weeks ago. There are only 4 or 5 of them if I remember correctly. These things are massive and are designed to carry large fuselage parts of the new 787, which they build and fabricate parts there in SC. The thing looks like the Hindenburg sitting on the runway.

I'm glad they were able to land without having a crash. It had to be a close call at the smaller airport.

That's a crazy story. I wonder what they will do? Even offloading gallons of fuel and the cargo, that still would be a nerve wracking take off.

Maybe though they can probably land in a shorter distance.

The airport I used work at was 6300 ft., so that is similar in size to this airport. That is a huge difference. I am guessing the plane probably would be safe, but it still probably breaks FAA regulations.

JATO (Jet Assisted Take Off), perhaps?

I just saw a news report that the plane is set to take off later Thursday afternoon. There were no details on how it will be able to take off. I assume they will off load to reduce weight which should shorten the amount of takeoff runway needed.

Yeah, the first thing I thought of was Mythbusters. They'd build a ramp on one end of the runway, and strap a 100 JATO's onto the plane. :lol2:

I would not want to be the guy trying to get that thing off the ground... The end of that runway will come up quick.

Should make for good live television

I remember sitting on the runway at JFK in May in one of those tiny regional jets... Taxiing out to the runway, there was a line of planes waiting to take off, and several of them were those HUGE Airbus planes... I couldn't believe how big they were next to the plane I was on. What was even more impressive was the fact that they actually fly. :lol2:

The takeoff attempt is expected around noon (1 p.m. ET).

Not surprisingly, they have brought in a new crew.
