November 21, 201312 yr This type incident occurred at Lexington/Frankfort a few years a go. A passenger jet mistakenly landed at the Frankfort airport instead of the Lexington Bluegrass Airport. They had to unload the passengers and bus them afterwards since it could not take off due to the shorter runway. They then lightened up the aircraft and maybe used the rocket assist to get it out. I think the problem is that the FAA consolidates radar tracking off-shift. So an airport like Lexington does not have 24 x 7 on-site radar. So the radar people actually instructing the pilots are in another city and the local tower is just on visual and ground tracking radar. If the pilot and the FAA radar room think they are lined up on the correct runway - that is where they land. The local tower does not know there is a problem till the plane has landed.

November 21, 201312 yr I remember sitting on the runway at JFK in May in one of those tiny regional jets... Taxiing out to the runway, there was a line of planes waiting to take off, and several of them were those HUGE Airbus planes... I couldn't believe how big they were next to the plane I was on. What was even more impressive was the fact that they actually fly. :lol2: When we flew to Frankfurt Germany a few months ago our gate was next to a gate that had a 747 in it and next to that was an Airbus 380. That thing dwarfed the 747, they are massive.

November 21, 201312 yr Author I'm sure the crew they brought in specialize in these type of takeoffs. I'd say the other crew won't be flying again anytime soon. That's a pretty big navigational error.

Especially when everything is computerized until final landing...unless for some reason they put the wrong airport into the computer but then you still have Air Traffic Control......just seemed odd, can't wait to hear how the screw up occurred.

November 21, 201312 yr Cop giving press update just said plane is as it was when it landed and they don't expect any issues with it taking back off.
