It's just a number right? Except even those of you saying that, admit that it is a numerical representation of Satan. So to your thinking there is nothing wrong with making a person who is a follower of Jesus Christ wear a number that to nearly everyone and especially that person is the same as wearing the word Satan plastered on her chest.

 

What if hypothetically there was some random number that was synonymous with Hitler, say his plan for the Holocaust was Plan 214. Any time people saw the number 214 they thought of Hitler and his carrying out the Holocaust. Would you not allow someone to opt out of that number? Or let's say a person kills someone you love and that person and all of his followers and supporters have a tattoo of the number 812 on their forehead. Everyone supporting this guy is wearing shirts proclaiming his innocence with a big 812 on it. Well the person is convicted and goes to prison, two weeks later your running your local 10K. You go to sign in and they give you 812, you going to wear a number that is known to represent the man that killed your loved one?

In the end this whole mess seems to fall on the coach who apparently knew this would be an issue and didn't communicate it to the girl until the last minute. If Logistically it could not be changed so be it. Don't mock this girl for not wanting to wear it because "It's just a number", we all know better than that, it's not just a number...IF YOUR A CHRISTIAN!

Disagree with you here Jumper. I don't think that, and it appears to me several other Christians on here don't feel that way either. Now, if there was a mechanism beforehand that the coach could have taken to try and get the number changed since she knew it may be an issue with this young girl, then fine go ahead and try to change the number. Or, the event organizers could leave it out entirely, I'd have no problem with that. But there should have never been a problem here in the first place. Wear the number, it means absolutely NOTHING as far as ones Christian faith is concerned...God isn't going to care that's the number you drew.

So Jumper, are you saying if you went to the court house to get new tags for your vehicle, and you got ABC 666, it would really be that big a deal for you?

 

If people really feel that way, then there's a LOT of stuff they better be checking. Insurance policy numbers, vehicle serial numbers, all kinds of stuff could have 666 in it. Wouldn't those things be a problem as well?

I don't know about this particular race and honestly I haven't read the coverage, but lots of races kids don't wear a bib with a number on it - the number is actually written on the athlete. My guess is that would add another twist among Christians from more fundamental denominations.

There is an easy solution. In Ohio kids are assigned a number before the seaons, it is phyically on the uniform, and it is their number for all races. I am sure it changes the management of meets from how they are done now.

The coach even admitted that he/she thought the girl would have a problem with the number and the coach still didn't let the girl know before the race. Isn't the easy solution for the coach to communicate with the runner so they could have done a number change within the specifications and timetable of the rules?

No question. As I said, I haven't followed the events closely, but from a distance this certainly could have been handled better by all parties involved.

Umm....No, not all Christians. I'm Christian, and it is just a number.

 

I love how you're trying to paint those of us who are Christian and see no issue with the number as some sort of lesser Christians than those who think it has some special meaning.

So, I had to reorder a prescription the other say over the phone. The prompt asked me for my 7 digit prescription number. I look for it...and low and behold guess what it started with? 666xxxx. I'm pretty sure God isn't mad at me for taking my prescription.
