LIPTON BASH Posted November 6, 2013 Posted November 6, 2013 KY Girls CC runner Pulls Out of Race Over "666" Bib Number This is possibly one of the stupidest things I've ever heard. It's a number for crying out loud. I agree with you 100% that it wouldn't bother me. But you would figure race officals could bend a little for someones relgious beliefs.
UKMustangFan Posted November 6, 2013 Author Posted November 6, 2013 I agree with you 100% that it wouldn't bother me. But you would figure race officals could bend a little for someones relgious beliefs. Disagree. It's a number, end of story. It's a good lesion to learn for her. You can't just complain and get your way in life. She was well within her right to withdraw, and I admire her for sticking to her beliefs, but at the end of the day, it's a stupid number.
Jumper_Dad Posted November 6, 2013 Posted November 6, 2013 Maybe she has Hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia
Jumper_Dad Posted November 6, 2013 Posted November 6, 2013 Many stories over the year of athletes not wanting "Unlucky" numbers and changing and having plenty of other superstitions, is this really that different? Are you just upset because of the religious tone to her wanting to change.

Jumper_Dad Posted November 6, 2013 Posted November 6, 2013 Well I'm not going to bag on her for her personal beliefs, glad to see that she stayed the course and walked if that's her true belief. Too many people today compromise their own beliefs to go along with the convention of others. Good to see someone stand up for what she believes.
BigVMan23 Posted November 6, 2013 Posted November 6, 2013 Here's the problem I have. Why is the world would she think wearing that number would, as she stated, hurt her relationship with God? I think she's putting WAY too much thought into the whole issue and way too much significance on a lowly number. She should have smiled, shrugged it off and said "hey, I guess I'll just be a "beast" on the course today". It's not like she was wearing a bib promoting abortion or drug use. What if she had drawn 420? Would she have worn that? For those that don't know, 420 is used to signify marijuana/pot use. I think the whole thing is a little silly, personally.
75center Posted November 6, 2013 Posted November 6, 2013 They have buildings where they don't number a floor as number 13, is there a reason they can't just leave that number out? Not a big deal but it seems pretty easy to do to me.
OlDog75 Posted November 6, 2013 Posted November 6, 2013 So...I would have just turned the bib upside down and be 999. What's the problem with that? I know that's an over-simplification but, come on. I'm not familiar with Cross County rules but couldn't she have switched numbers with another runner?
dd734 Posted November 6, 2013 Posted November 6, 2013 Maybe she has Hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia Hecksa-ko-see-oi-heck-see-con-ta-hecksa-fo-bi-a = skeert of sixes Pomfretphobia : Fear of monkeys Ophidiophobia : Fear of snakes Selachophobia : Fear of sharks Arachnophobia : Fear of spiders koutaliaphobia : Fear of spoons My point is who the heck came up with Hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia, fear of 666's
mcpapa Posted November 6, 2013 Posted November 6, 2013 I agree with you 100% that it wouldn't bother me. But you would figure race officals could bend a little for someones relgious beliefs. I've said it before and I'll say it again. Cross-country officials must be toilet-trained at gunpoint. If not, their applications to become cross-country officials are not considered.
jericho Posted November 6, 2013 Posted November 6, 2013 Do you expect a Jewish runner to wear a swatstika symbol for a race if they had to. Just a symbol. Would you expect your preacher to have 666 on his liscence plate if that is what he was given?

Clyde Posted November 6, 2013 Posted November 6, 2013 For those familiar with track and field rules could she have received a different number? I can tell you in basketball we do allow uniform violations IF it's deemed to be for religious reasons. Seems like a simple solution would have been to give her a different number.
