What happens the next day? Act 1 is self defense which is what you have Martin doing in your post. You tell me what happens next. Richie could gain new respect for him and leave him alone. Richie could self report himself to the coaches. Richie could continue to pummel an unconscious Martin.

You'd have to ask the blacks that allowed him to use it in that fashion with no repurcussion. You'd have to ask the blacks that have publicly said he's not racist. You'd have to ask the blacks that said Richie is blacker than Martin so he can use it like that. There is no approved usage of the N-word in my eyes. I'm just telling you why it isn't bigoted when Richie used the words. I do not think he is a bigot.

I grew up going to school at this address. I played football on a team that was mostly black. I have myself used the word in the presence of black peers and all involved found it acceptable, and while I wouldn't as an adult I'm not going to pretend that using it to mean "dude" and "black man" is the same.

 

And yeah, I have been around white dudes who adopted black culture, which is to say more the typically acceptable appropriation of black culture.

But the way it is used in music and movies is the same way the black guys that use it every day are using it. And the white guys who I know who thought they were black that used it were far from bigoted, insensitive racists. They were just stupid and their mindset was distorted by their environments. Fortunately they had me to school them on how stupid they sounded and why they shouldn't use it at all.
