This is one of those deals the more I read the less I understand.

I've done the same kind of labeling as the Covington police. While it is gang activity I have been hesitant to call groups like this one a gang. These are wannabes to me but I understand why most would label them a gang.

 

A real gang wouldn't choose murder for something this petty.

There are numerous "Th'Planes" videos on Youtube featuring Desean Peterson. In relationship to this story, they are an interesting watch. The song "Wuz Up Wit U" begins with the camera focused on the street sign in Covington at 17th & Garrard St where Desean was killed. That's sorta freaky. I'm not a big hip hop fan, but I can see from these videos that within the hip hop world this group, and especially Desean, might've potentially been on their way to something bigger. The production of these videos are fairly decent. I find most hip hop to be a dime a dozen, as originality is limited, and it's typically as redundant as can be, but for fans of this sorta tough type rap, I can see where it could've had widespread appeal.

 

I can also see how the Covington Police Department must've studied these videos quite closely.

I get what you mean. I just consider a gang a group of people who are organized to do harm. When I grew up there were multiple self identified gangs in the city the police didn't recognize. Baby hill top gangsters in city heights . Rolling 20 around 10th green up, Howell street boys , 13th street pyru , and the funniest name Latonia Mafia. None of them probably would of been take serious in a big city but in my youth they caused a lot of harm . City didn't recognize any of them. Didn't stop crime they committed .

Read through a lot of the comments on their videos from Youtube. Previous to the murder there was an assortment of diss comments back and forth. There's one on their song "24 Hours" from 6 months ago where the disser was warning someone from "Th'Planes" to not walk alone and made reference to "Plane Crash" as a threat.

 

There's also a rap artist out there named Donny Billz who has a diss video called "Plane Crash", and then Th'Planes reply to it with their own diss video "Donny Billz Vs Hassan (Th'fight that started Th'diss) Th'planes reply".

 

Sounds like crazy stuff has been brewing for awhile. Sad thing besides the murder is that they're all so young, and being cool, bad & tough is such a priority. It's a shame that perhaps with a few years of "maturity" they might've stepped a bit a way from the pier pressure game, and Desean could've lived.

 

All kids, or at least lots of them, including myself, go through stupid stages where coolness means everything. It's just sad when that stage includes violent thinking and actions and they live on a steady diet of it. If they don't die they still stand the chance of ruining their lives at such a young age before the so called "maturity" has a chance to set in. That's assuming that it ever does.

 

That's where upbringing and parents play a big roll in making the difference. Anyone wanna guess what type of guidance these kids have had their whole lives?

 

Another thing. There's also a short Th'Planes video called "Drop It" that was completely filmed on the campus and in the halls of Holmes High School. I'm just wondering how they managed to pull that off? Don't mean to diss Holmes, but sounds to me like some adults were asleep at the watch.

Agree 100%, It's a shame so many of these kids are "failed" by those who brought them into this world.

I agree with Lawnboy about the music, and I use than term loosely. And he should probably get used to wearing orange.
