October 24, 201312 yr ...possibly play professionally in something? Heck, maybe even some of you did? I was thinking back on this recently, reminiscing to earlier, more healthy, athletic times...and did I waste some natural God given ability along the way that I was blessed with. I have concluded that yeah, I probably did. Although I played and concentrated mostly on basketball, my most natural ability and what I was built for was football...in particular tight end. I was big, fast, strong, had very good hands, tall. But I shied away from football because...as a younger man, I could be somewhat easily intimidated...not a trait you want in a football player, it was just a personality trait I had at that time...and I never really knew until I got older just how talented I was and the kind of abilities I actually had. Coaches tried to tell me, but I never really took them seriously. With all that said...today I have no doubt that I could have been a good DI pass catching tight end...or at least the ability was there. I think the skill set I had may have been good enough for the NFL. Now, would I have thrown my helmet down and quit the first time a Lawrence Taylor or Mike Singletary broke me in half after catching a 7 yard checkdown in the middle of the field? Quite possibly, because it takes more than physical talent to play at that level. It takes a ton of guts and the ability to put your body on the line and it took me a while for that to develop in my personality. But the natural ability and attributes were there. Anyone else want to reminisce with me?
October 24, 201312 yr Nope....Well maybe drinking beer....Heck maybe I still could. I'm good at that. I can drink beer with the best of them. :lol2:

The cash prize was enough that contestants would drive in from out of town. If you win enough I guess you could be a semi-professional beer drinker? The event was usually held outside since there were always a few amatuers who would pound the pitcher, release a loud belch and then bring the pitcher of beer back up.

I for one, think that would look excellent on a resume.
October 24, 201312 yr I wasn't even close. I only played with one person that made pros. I played little league baseball with Phil Simms. Of course, he also played football, but at a Catholics grade and middle school. I played rec football. By the way, I think he could have probably given baseball a run for its money, too. Me, I showed up and had fun, just an average athlete. My speed was my only asset. I had very little strength, so I was a weak armed outfielder that hit bloop singles. I player rb and linebacker, and point guard. I could steal it pretty well, and get it up the court, but I had no finesse and might make the layup. As an adult though, I don't know how it happened, but I developed a pretty decent outside shot. Pro ability, not even close.
October 24, 201312 yr I don't know if it was the first knee surgery, or the second knee surgery or the third knee surgery, or the broken arm, or the separated shoulder/torn labrum(all in high school). But my pro stock dropped a little bit more after each one. Then in college I had my 4th and final(so far) knee surgery my third ACL reconstruction. That was nearly a decade ago now. I think my vertical has dropped off by a good foot, no way I have a 27 inch vertical any more. I'm definitely no chasing someone down in a foot race and my hand eye coordination is better explained as comical nowadays. I was rather athletic and pretty strong too but I just didn't have the genetics to support the athletic ability that I did possess. Thanks Mom and Dad :eyeonyou:

October 25, 201312 yr It's because the recruiters never saw those camper/faculty games. We could pass and everything..... I bet a rematch of those games would be hilarious right about now. I was built for football with a love for basketball and a genetic makeup that was best suited for chess.
