I've been to watch many games where there were 3 refs and less fouls need to be called than with 2 refs. Maybe when the kids see 3 refs walk out they know they won't be able to get by with any cheap shots away from the ball, therefore less fouls are needed to be called?

 

This is one of the theories as to why Highlands likes 2 man officiating crews. They play physical.

Mustang, the issue of having two officials can be blamed on the tight pockets at Highlands.

 

I was at the Holmes/Highlands game and they only had two officials there also. This is completely dictated by the home school and whether or not they are willing to pay for a third official. Highlands was contacted directly and told that they should have three officials for these big games, and they refuse.

 

The extra money they make at the gate on these big games would more than enough pay for the third official. Maybe they are saving the basketball gate money to buy some new football equipment. :flame: Or fix a jumbotron :flame: ... or .....

 

The officials at the Holmes/Highlands game spent more time stopping the Highlands and Holmes trash talking than they did officiating basketball. The officials get blamed for a game in which calls are missed. Blame it on the tight wad administrators.

 

We are behind everyone in the state with implementing the 3 man crew across the board. The Ninth region officials need to start refusing to work games of this caliber unless there is a third official. NO EXCEPTIONS

What more could Brossart have wanted, away game with an "alumni" official doing their game? This official groomed these kids from 3rd grade on. He use to officiate in the Cath. grade school league.

Who was the "alumni" official? - one was a grad from NCC and not sure who the other was. Even though the official knew alot of these boys from officiating the Cath. grade school games, believe me it is never a plus to have him officiating - most of the time it goes against us. How many kids fouled out from Highlands?

The problem that I have with the officiating in the 9th region is that it is not consistent from half to half. If you are going to let them bang in the first half you should not come out in the second half and call every ticky tack foul. The issue is merely one of consistency IMO.

I have no problem with 9th region officals as a whole. Anyone from the 9th who complains should go watch a 10th region game.

 

But I do have a problem with one ref particular in the 9th. Who I won't name. But he was one of the refs in the HC vs SK game. Since my playing days at HC and thru the present. He does alot of HC games, and seems to blow his whistle way to much wether it before HC or the oppenent in crucial moments of the game.

In the ninth region, it is a combination.

 

1. The coaches rate the officials.

2. The evaluators rate the officials (these are veteran officials that go out and observe other officials).

3. The assignor rates the officials.

 

Whe it comes to state rankings, they have evaluators from NFHS go to tournaments like the Boys and Girls All "A", and the regionals are done by evaluators from other regions, and the girls and boys state tournaments.

I don't think any of us have pointed a finger at this official. Nobody said he did a bad job. We did say that he and his partner were "overwhelmed," as most officials would have been in that situation. The comments have been that a three man crew with an "in-charge" guy like Charlie would have kept the game better under control. When officials stray from calling what is happening to picking and choosing what to call, games get out of control.

The point is that it is equally unfair to the two officials who get offered up in these "high profile" games as it is to the two teams playing them.

It was also said that this was an extremely physical game - it was. Neither team really gained an advantage - BUT, if "let them play" does equate to one team gaining an advantage over another then it becomes unfair.

 

This used to happen in the district tournaments when the officials were going to let the kids decide the game on the floor - the bigger, stronger teams won out and the smaller, weaker teams took a blood-bath.

 

Actually we would prefer to have officials with no ties to either team. Too often the official with the connection goes out of his way to be unbiased towards the team that he is associated with, that he ends up being biased against them.

There is a valid scenario for this. The official go to the locker room at half time and talk about what they need to tighten up on and what the need to back off of. If the game is getting too physical, the officials can loose control of the game pretty easy (Holmes vs. Highlands for example). If they don't start calling it tighter, they could end up with a brawl if they are not careful. In the Holmes vs. Highlands game the officials did a good job of keeping control of that game, even though they were outnumbered being a 2 man crew.

 

I do understand the inconsistency of this and that the players get used to banging, then in the second half they get called for it. I guess this is why they get 5 fouls and not 1.

 

I do have one question. How many times is Guidugli going to get called for a technical for getting in someone's grill after he gets fouled without Schlarman sitting him down and telling him to take a chill pill. He is a great player, but he needs to understand that basketball is a contact sport. If he doesn't like it, go play tennis. :fight: :fight:

I think Greg Eaton is also able to do this to a lesser extent as well. His all out hustle forces the other kids to put forth the same effort as he does.

I agree he plays hard, but he had a third in the Holmes vs. Highlands game. He may not have gotten a technical in that game. He was just trash talking the whole game. This stuff also takes him out of his game. He disappeared for a while in the Holmes game. Probably preoccuppied with the trash talking.

 

As an official, I would say they are forced to keep an eye on him because a kid that responds the way he does to any physical play, is a kid that could explode and take a cheap shot at someone. Not saying he would, but he is the stereotype.

 

The play at Cov Cath was just good hustle on the CC players part diving for a ball when he took Guidulgi's legs out, but Guidulgi got up went after him. The CC kid didn't deserve a technical in that case... he deserved kudo's for good hustle. The officials gave them a double technical to send a message to both teams that they weren't going to tolerate the garbage.
