Why is Highlands Calling Time Outs When up 42-0?

Featured Replies

If Harrison County had a problem with it maybe play better defense and stop them. I can't see why they would have a problem with it, Mack would never stop a guy at 3rd in a blow out. JMO

Not sure that you are understanding the scenario here.

HHS got the ball back with about 1:10 left in the second quarter on their own 20 yard line. Used 3 time outs after 2 completions and 1 incompletion. Had 1 shot at the endzone from the 25 to end the half. Knocked down.

Unlike Tribe Called Quest the OP didn't give much of a scenario. The thread was just a topic and some quotes. So if I was given much if a scenario I might of given a more in depth response. From a coaching stand point I have some typical reasons some teams might do it.

Maybe they were just trying to give Harrison Co. a chance to work on their defense.

Nobody at Harrison is complaining. Mac subs early and often in big time blowouts in baseball much like Highlands does in football. Congrats to the Bluebirds for taking care of business, myself and many in Cynthiana have nothing but respect for your program. Good Luck going forward!

The offense didn't see much of the field in the 1st half b/c most of the points were from the defense and special teams. Dale knew with a running clock going into the half that his starters would sit and wanted to get one more series in' date=' IMO.[/quote']

Bad answer. Did you watch the entire game? Who scored the last touchdown for HHS?

Probably trying to get a few more snaps for Houliston and the first team. That would be my guess..

Does not sound like you were there my friend. Better check with your peeps.

They called a timeout so they could find out the SK/CC score! :D

Surprised SK have up so many points... Kept checking.

Scored one on JV, SK went for a fourth down on CC side 40 and sis not get it. Ran two reverses one for TD one to the Red Zone. SK was scoring pretty much at will the D was tired so they gave a TD here and there to get off the field. (Just Kidding)

Could have been because of those damn headsets, seems to be an issue inside the "Birds nest". :lol2:

Regardless of the score, your first string plays the entire first half as aggressively as possible.

Even after I lost my ACL, I continued to chart the plays on Saturdays in street clothes when I was a freshman QB at Centre. One Saturday we were destroying Rhodes College, and the final score was 61-0. Our head coach, a great coach and person, Joe McDaniel, was calling timeouts and throwing the ball deep at the end of the half. I can’t remember the score, but at the half I think we had over 40 points.

The Rhodes coach was a good friend of Coach McDaniel’s. At halftime, I was walking off the field with Coach McDaniel when the opposing coach came running over saying something to the effect of, “Joe, what are you doing? Why are you running up the score?”

Coach told him that in the first half, your team remains aggressive and tries to score as much as you can. After the first half, that is the time to back off.

That has stuck with me as a coach. Regardless of the score, we usually continue to play aggressively until the half.

I was asked abt the timeouts by a fellow HHS fan and at the time I had no answer, but after talking to a couple coaches that were in the press box, they explained that they were gonna run their 2 minute O no matter the score. Harrison Co. supporters nearby agreed with the notion and had no issue with it whatsoever, but the perception is not good.

Harrison Co. Head coach is a class act and so is their radio crew...I must have spoken with a dozen HC fans and they all were nice as can be. Good luck to them the rest of the way.

The real issue in this game had absolutely nothing and I mean nothing to do with the timeouts called at the end of the first half. The score was only 42-0 at that time and the only way to get plays off was to call timeout. If working on a 2 minute drill as proposed above, do you not have your placekicker warming up to attempt a field goal if need be or is it only done to attempt to score a touchdown? If the latter, then is that really a 2 minute drill?

Well what if you need a td to win in the 4th with 2 minutes left in the game?

I get that line of thinking.

However, are you really getting any better when it's against a team that is so weak? You'd get better practice for later in the year by going against your own team.

And what if you are down 2 points with under a minute left to go in the game?
