Speaking of the Inquisition, I remember when Newport jazz station WNOP-AM, 740 on the dial, used to say "Just to the right of (700) WLW and just to the left of Torquemada." I always laughed when I heard that. Then the Catholics bought WNOP and replaced Count Basie with Father Corapi. I still haven't recovered.

Well let's be a little reasonable here. The Vatican can't investigate every person that visits and attends mass. Nancy Pelosi has already made her political beliefs known to the public so the Vatican knowing where she stands isn't too hard to refuse to give communion to her.

I'm not sure the Vatican is investigating much of anything these days -- other than those dissident American nuns who went on that bus tour. Vatican PR folks certainly aren't saying much about the recent sex scandals in Europe. Did the Vatican even investigate EWTN darling Father Corapi after someone exposed his million-dollar con game?!

Shouldn't Pelosi be able to appeal Burke's decision? Directly to the Pope? I don't think the Vatican wants that to happen. Then again, an appeal would be an acknowledgement that a right-winger like Burke actually has some control over Nancy's spiritual and political life, and that ain't going to happen.

1139 is when the celibacy rule was put on the books. This was done mainly so children of priests couldn't make claims on church property.

Something in that article that I was not aware of is that for a priest/bishop to refuse communion to someone, that issue at stake must manifest itself. In other words, it should be something that everyone in the parish (or possibly the community) is already aware of so when the refusal of communion is made, everyone is well aware of why. If for example, my priest found out that I am routinely cheating on my wife and he becomes aware of it but my parish as a whole does not, he is not to refuse me communion so as to reveal to everyone that I have done something serious, that is to be kept private. As I said, I was not aware of this but understand it.
