September 27, 201312 yr Protecting innocents should be part of an organized moral society, right? One would think so.
September 27, 201312 yr I'd rather give you some knowledge but past experience tells me it would be useless. Do yourself a favor and actually check out some information before you post. I did. I just checked out when priestly celibacy went on the books in the Catholic Church -- Second Lateran Council, 1139.
September 27, 201312 yr this thread makes me miss Ol' Alabama . I wasnt even a member but loved reading his post.
September 27, 201312 yr It's natural to segue on these threads. You also are a smart person, so it shouldn't be that difficult to dual-task from time to time. There is another term for seque on this board, it is called thread jacking and is frowned upon. If I find myself bringing up a new topic that pulls away from the original topic I will start a new thread for the new topic.
September 27, 201312 yr I did. I just checked out when priestly celibacy went on the books in the Catholic Church -- Second Lateran Council, 1139. Which doesn't support your claim at all. I have spent half my career in an organization that has to deal with the aftermath of child abuse, particularly in boys and abuse by Priests has been a major, major focus at times. Tell you what two, I'm going offer you a suggestion. Present a credible study that shows celibacy is "most certainly" a factor in child abuse since you claim it is. I will then present my resources on my claim that studies suggest it isn't. You in?
September 27, 201312 yr Slick bit of logic to go after Pelosi but not the soccer moms on the pill. My guess is the policy of not "outing" a sinner publicly has existes loooooong before soccer moms took the pill so I don't see how it can be seen as a slick way to avoid something. The church as taught for most of its existence that the responsibility to obstain from communion when one has turned away from the church and has no intention of reconciling back lies with the faithful, not with the clergy to act as a communion referee. However, when the faithful has turned their back on the church and is doing so in a way that all can see, it then forces the church to act because not doing so could inadvertently give the impression that the church condones or atleast tolerates the actions against church teaching. So back to my example of if I were cheating on my wife not on a one time failure but instead continuously and had no intention of stopping, if no one was aware of my continued infidelity, the responsibility is on me, not clergy. If my infidelity was well known and I was "flaunting it", then my bishop would have the responsibility to inform pastors in the area that I should not receive communion. Similar to the religious sisters who have been continuously and very publicly acting against church teaching, the responsibillity fulls back to the church to act.

I salute your work in assisting victims of priest rape. If what you say is correct, then the head of the church in Australia disagrees with your assessment, as do most Catholics. By the way, Cardinal Pell's comments are far more candid than what anyone has opined on this board the past few days in defense of the indefensible. I particularly like this quote: ''If we'd been gossips, which we weren't … we would have realised earlier just how widespread this business was,'' Cardinal Pell said. Celibacy a factor in some cases, says Pell Poll: Catholics Say Celibacy, Homosexuality Contributed to Sex Abuse - Political Hotsheet - CBS News

I thought the deal with the nuns is that they were castigated for talking too much about helping the least among us and not opposing abortion more. Which is pretty much in line with what the Pope recently said in his interview.
September 27, 201312 yr I'm sad for you twotoplace. You obviously have been personally hurt by " the church" or sure seem to have been . Please don't judge God because of sin filled man.
September 27, 201312 yr I'm sad for you twotoplace. You obviously have been personally hurt by " the church" or sure seem to have been . Please don't judge God because of sin filled man. Thanks for your concern, Dan. I simply try to look at the church objectively, without being weighed down by millstones of guilt and fear. I certainly am not judging God; I am judging felonious activity of men who wear Roman collars.

Celibacy a factor in some cases, says Pell Poll: Catholics Say Celibacy, Homosexuality Contributed to Sex Abuse - Political Hotsheet - CBS News Polls and opinions are irrelevant, I'm talking studies and facts. I'll give you a hint, start with The National Center on Missing and Exploited Children. They're not a Catholic organization although I find it interesting that you want a study with no ties to Catholics but then you post a poll of Catholics because you think it supports your incorrect claim. Nice cherry picking.

Which is pretty much in line with what the Pope recently said in his interview. The nuns are challenging the church's teaching on women being priests, gay marriage, and some other areas but those are the two the jump out the most.

September 30, 201312 yr Where'd he go? Crickets....:lol2: I thought this thread had expired -- which was probably a good thing. In any event, if you wish for me to hammer away some more at the doors of the Vatican, I will be happy to do so. 75Center could have posted an actual link to an actual non-rigged study, but he declined to do so. A little googling shows that the only hard data made public by any religious denomination in this nefarious child-rape business comes from the John Jay College study of Catholic priests, which was authorized and is being paid for by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. So I still await a non-rigged study showing that celibates are "just like normal people."
October 1, 201312 yr I gave you a hint, follow it. I want you to find it so you won't complain when it blows your theory away. Here's another hint, look for studies of population percentages for child abuse among priests vs the general population.
