Franklin County 28 Beechwood 24

Flyers hold on to get the win

big come back for the Flyers!

nice job by Bw, they appear to have made some strides!

Tough ending for Beechwood but a good prep game for the Cards.

Turnovers by FCHS kept this one close. BW came to play.

Flyers finally quit fumbling and played Flyer Football. Chris Roberts is beast, on the run called back for a holding (bogus) call he carried guys and broke multiple tackles. In the 2nd half in about a 3 play sequence Lorenzo McCaskill blocked a Beechwood punt (The punter was doing a rugby punt and he came from the opposite side and blocked it). Then he ran the ball and made an unreal move and popped outside and blazed his way to the TD. Good luck to Beechwood the rest of the way and have a safe trip home. GO FLYERS!

What class is Fc in?

Class 5A

1. Bowling Green at McCallie School (TN)

2. Conner vs. 6A Campbell County

3. John Hardin at 6A Pleasure Ridge Park

4. Anderson County vs. 4A Mercer County

5. Harlan County at 4A #6 Johnson Central

6. Franklin County vs. 1A #3 Beechwood

7. Graves County at 1A #1 Mayfield

8. Pulaski County at 4A Rockcastle County

9. Scott at 2A Covington Holy Cross

10. Madison Southern -- OPEN

Flyers gotta get back to work. The D has regressed for the last 2 games. Better get ready for Devin Taylor and West Jess guys.

To address some slanted views above first, before I give the game report:

1. Turnovers did not keep the game close. It was a well played game for the most part by both sides. Saying it was close because of turnovers is discrediting Beechwood and how well they played. Franklin County had two turnovers, Beechwood had one. Franklin County turned it over on the 10 after driving a long way and Beechwood turned it over on the 20 after driving it from their own 5. Beechwood intercepted a pass at the 18. Both teams had a couple other plays where they fumbled the ball but recovered their own fumble.

2. Bogus holding call on TD run that got it called back ... no way anyone can make that claim until they see game film. That is looking at the game with the homer glasses on. There were calls and non calls both sides were upset about, like there is in any close game.

3. Franklin County defense has not regressed IMO. They played their best game of the year from the 3 games I have seen. They got stops when they needed them and made Beechwood earn everything they got tonight.

This was a very exciting game to watch and the future D1 players for Franklin County made the plays to win it. McCaskill is a sure D1 player. One of the fastest I have ever seen in high school. He made 3 or 4 huge game changing plays, including the incredible game winning TD run with 7:37 to go in the game. Roberts, if he gets focused and works hard, should play D1 ball too. He is a load to tackle and has good speed. I don't think he will play RB or LB on a D1 level but he is big enough to add bulk and play perhaps defensive end. But in high school at his size and speed, he is a weapon and made some big plays on both sides of the ball. He appeared to get winded easily but he is a man.

The D has not Regressed, The Wood and The Dirty 30 can PLAY!!! Congrats to the FLyers.........

Bogus? Was the Critical PI call on third down bogus too ? All games have those calls. In tight games it's more critical do we see everything.

I know that wasn't PI, but I didn't see any hold either. The PI was at a critical point and would have likely locked the game up for BW.

I'm extremely proud of the tigers.

Here is your game report:

First Quarter

Beechwood took their opening drive 80 yards and scored on a 17 yard TD pass from Kyle Fieger to Joe Studer at the 9:42 mark. Franklin County picked up a couple first downs but was forced to punt and pinned Beechwood at the 5 yard line. The Tigers did not let the poor field position bother them as they again marched down field. It looked like they were headed for a second score when they fumbled the ball over to the Flyers at the Franklin County 25. The Flyers were able to move the ball on this possession and got the game tieing score on a 35 yard TD pass and run from QB Barrett Sanderson to Landen Hurst, 7-7 with 1:22 to go in the first quarter. Beechwood then went 3 and out.

Second Quarter

Franklin County took the lead on another short pass by Sanderson that was turned into a TD on a nice tackle breaking run by #9 (name? Sheldon Goins?), 31 yards on the score and FC led 14-7 with 10:46 to go. Beechwood moved the ball again from their 20 across midfield but was stopped on downs at the 42. The Flyers went 3 and out and punted the ball into the end zone. Beechwood again started on their own 20 and put together another long scoring drive. They converted on a 4th down play at the 18 and then scored on a 4 yard run by Studer with 2:50 to go in the half, tied now at 14. Franklin Co. had a penalty on the kickoff return and started their drive from the 8. The Tigers defense got a 3 and out and a short punt gave Beechwood the ball at the Flyer 44 with time left to get the lead. The Flyer defense put some pressure on and covered the receivers well. Fieger ran the ball instead of taking a chance at passing it and stopping the clock with an incompletion, and time ran out on the Tigers. This will be one teaching series for the young QB.

Third Quarter

The Flyers received the second half kickoff and returned it to the 28. On the first play of the half, they handed the ball to Chris Roberts (#21), a huge high school RB, and he made a couple moves and broke open. Three Tigers chased and caught Roberts at about the 20 but he would not go down, dragging them for 5 yards or so and then finally breaking free and going in for a great score. However, holding was called and the play came back. On the next play, Studer intercepted a bubble screen pass and Beechwood had the ball at the 18. One play later they had the lead when Fieger hit Jeremy Burns on their own bubble screen and Burns made one cut then turned on the jets to race into the end zone, 21-14 Tigers just 1:12 seconds into the half. The Flyers bounced back with their own drive, starting at their 20 and moving down field to the 10. At that point, Roberts fumbled the ball and Beechwood recovered. The Tigers put together another long drive from their own 10 to first and goal. Then a bad shotgun snap pushed the ball out of field goal range and on 4th down Fieger stepped out of bounds before attempting a pass in the end zone. This series will be another teaching moment for Beechwood's sophomore QB. If he had thrown an incomplete pass when scrambling after the bad snap, the Tigers would have still been well within field goal range. Then he didn't take a shot at the end zone on the next play, so the Tigers wasted the long drive and scoring chance. The Flyers had the ball at their 32 but went 3 and out. Beechwood marched from their 16 to scoring range again as the quarter came to an end.

Fourth Quarter

The Tiger drive stalled so Coach Rash sent in the field goal team. Miles Sletto hit the 27 yard field from a tough angle on the hash and the Tigers led 24-14 with 11:02 to go in the game. The Tigers had dominated time of possession, gained twice the yardage of the Flyers, ran the ball well, made big 3rd and 4th down plays and contained the powerful Flyer offense. But the Flyers are explosive and they weren't done. They quickly moved from their 35 into Beechwood territory, aided by a questionable pass interference call. Then Sanderson flipped a pass in the flats to Roberts and he would not be denied the end zone, again breaking tackles on a 15 yard TD reception and run. In less then 2 minutes, with 9:08 now left in the game, the Flyers had it back to a one score game, trailing 24-21. Beechwood needed to put together another drive but the Flyer defense forced a 3 and out. On the punt, Studer rolled to his right on the rugby punt and was chased down from the backside by McCaskell before he punted the ball. Only someone as fast as McCaskell going as hard as possible could make this play. He dove from Studer's blindside as Studer was kicking the ball, wiped Studer out on the play but was ruled as getting a hand on the ball by the ref. The punt went to the 42. On the next play, McCaskell followed the punt deflection with an amazing TD run, making a couple of cuts on a play that appeared well defended and then showing his tremendous speed as he gave the Flyers the lead, 28-24 with 7:37 to go. Hopefully someone posts the video of this run as it was a really good one. The Tigers fought back, moving the ball from their own 22 down to the Flyers 22. But the Flyer defense rose to the occasion again and stopped the Tigers on downs. From there, Roberts converted on a big 3rd down to keep possession. The Flyers were forced to punt but it was the last play of the game. Final score Flyers 28- Tigers 24.

Stars of the Game

Beechwood - QB Kyle Fieger. Fieger made some great throws in this game. He threw 35 yard completions on the run while off balance, hit out patterns, hit 25 yard slants on the money and threw a couple of long balls that were right on target and would have been TD's if not dropped by receivers. I don't know the yardage but would guess he was certainly over 300.

Franklin County - Lorenzo McCaskell. Stud. That is all you can say. If someone is faster in the state, I hope the Tigers never face him. Here are game changing plays by McCaskell in this one:

1. Saved a TD by catching Studer from behind. Studer was pulling away from two other Flyers when McCaskell blazed between both of them from at least 10 yards back to catch Studer.

2. Prior to the field goal, a Beechwood receiver appeared wide open on the end zone back line, McCaskell closed incredibly fast as the ball was in the air and came out of nowhere to defend a possible TD reception.

3. Again showed amazing speed coming completely from the back side on a rugby punt to deflect the ball.

4. 42 yard game winning TD run that must be seen to be appreciated.

This young man is a player. He not only has speed but he plays all out 100% all the time. Franklin County has a special one in this guy.

This score surprises me a little. Franklin County almost always scores 40+. Was there bad weather that affected the game and kept the score down? If no bad weather, great job by the Tigers, especially the defense. Holding Franklin County to 28, 14 through the first 3 quarters, is impressive. They are improving every week, which I expected with so many sophomores playing varsity for the first time. It is tough losing one like this that was right in their grasp but Franklin County is one of the top 5A programs in the state. I am sure this game will help the Tigers get the experience they need to win a title.
