Bowling Green's games against Tennessee teams

Featured Replies

I have been having a discussion with someone about Bowling Green's schedule and they made a very good point about the strength of their schedule. This is what they had to say about the two Tennessee teams on their schedule:

Blackman is ranked 180 nationally, 5 in TN and would be just behind Highlands in KY.

McCallie is ranked 358 nationally, 10 in TN and would be 7th in KY, between St. X and Simon Kenton.

In fairness to Bowling Green I wanted to give this its own thread.

When you add two ranked teams from TN to BG's schedule it becomes very solid.

Thoughts?

Agree? Disagree?

I mentioned this in one of the other BG threads. BG's schedule is not the strength of Trinity's schedule but it is still a quality schedule and their toughest schedule in a long time IMO. If they finish the season undefeated, well, we all know how I feel about how good BG is. :D

I feel like the point of BG having a solid schedule has already been made. They do; some people just choose to ignore it.

I've tried to make that point several times in some of these BG threads, but, it's seemed to have fallen on deaf ears. McCallie is in the DII private division, so, there schedule is loaded up with teams like MBA, Brentwood Academy, Ensworth, etc.. matter of fact, they play Ensworth this week. Blackman is a 6a team that last week knocked off traditional power, Riverdale 35-0, who beat St X last year. If I'm not mistaken, both of these teams have started the season 3-0 this year.

For comparisons sake, McCallie would be similar to a Lex Cath or Cov Cath type team.. Blackman would be similar to a Scott Co or Male.

I believe the usual retort was blah blah blah, Cincinnati schools, blah blah blah, national schedule, blah blah blah play Trinity and Highlands.

As the other posters here noted, it was mentioned that these teams they play were good. As I recall the response to my preview saying this was a beefed up schedule was "where's the beef".

There is a thread on here somewhere that gives an in depth look at both the Tennessee teams. I am on my phone but I think it is on page 4 or 5 of the Football Forum.

Guru;

Strongly agree that the addition of Blackman and McCallie will strengthen the Purples schedule. McCallie is Division 2 (private, scholarship granting), Class 2A along with Ensworth, Montgomery Bell, Brentwood Academy, etc. While not at the level of those 3, they are still a quality program. Blackman was one of the 3 largest schools in TN before Stewarts Creek opened last month and reduced their enrollment by about 300 kids. Blackman has sent two RBs to the SEC in recent years. Any team that plays in that Murfreesboro 6A district is tough (Oakland, Siegel, Riverdale, etc.). The Murfreesboro district is by far the strongest in TN Division 1 (public). I believe one of the high school football publications rated that district as one of the strongest in the nation a few years back.

We are defending Class 5A State Champs (15-0) in TN. We scrimmaged Oakland pre-season and play @ Siegel in two weeks. Those teams are strong!!!

Something else people need to keep in mind. That is most scheduled opponents are usually done with 2-4 year agreements so I don't know when this years BG schedule was done but 2 things stand out.

1. If the TN opponents were chosen this year to fill scheduling holes then it shows BG was purposely making a tough schedule to test this years team. Which is impressive to do. No cupcakes to fill openings.

2. If this schedule was made 1 or 2 years prior then BG really went out on a limb because 2 years ago BG didn't think the 2012 team was as strong as the 2011 team which also meant they would have questions about this years team.

Either way I'm impressed with them going out and playing really good OOS teams.

I was told before season that Blackman would be biggest test for Purples. So far, I think they are correct in saying that. If you have Google Earth, look up McCallie High School and take a look at their stadium/campus. I thought St. X had money - wow! MccCallie plays Ensworth week after they get the Purples; that will be fun to keep up with. Purples have a game tonight that they need to focus on but I know a lot of Purple fans are looking forward in heading down to Choo-Choo country next week to watch the Purples play in what looks to be a small college against a really good (big) team. They better have some jets on the team, their gonna need them!

I don't care who does it, but the Purples' winning streak must be halted! :stop:

Amazing how many of the detractors in the other threads are silent on this one. :idunno:

Any program claiming to be nationally ranked or ranked #1 in their state needs signature wins against quality in state or out of state opponents. Yea, everyone talks about Highlands and Trinity, but Highlands plays those teams from Ohio at least once a year. In 09 Highlands beat nationally ranked Cincinnati St. X , who was nationally ranked at #2 in the country. Anybody that knows about high school football knows that the Cincinnati and the GCL South is one of the strongest in the country. People in NKY gauge their teams strength and weaknesses by playing those big Cincinnati schools.

Trinity, well their schedule has been insane the last three years. It wasn't just the schedule but was the margin of victory over several of those nationally ranked teams. Nobody from Trinity had to jump up and down screaming that "we are #1" because everybody knew it.

The two teams from TN. should be a great test for BG. They are very good. Hope BG pulls off the win. Go Purples!!!

I remember the" where's the beef comment." I think that poster was expecting to see teams from Ohio on the schedule, and was a little disappointed when he didn't see any. I'm sure he meant no harm.

What else needs to be said? :idunno:

Bowling Green, Bowling Green, Bowling Green. I'm sick and tired with everything being about Bowling Green. I thought this was the Highlands High School web blog????? There's only 3 mentions of Highlands in this thread about BG. Opps, four with mine!

Nice scheduling BG!

There is not now nor really is there ever a reason for Bowling Green to play teams from Ohio. There are programs in Tennessee that are just as good as the Cincy powers. I would not object to Bowling Green scheduling a Brentwood, Ensworth, Montgomery Bell, etc. And maybe if they continue to rise, that's on the horizon. The Tennessee schools they have picked up were a strong step, one that was better than some would have led people to believe.

You'll get no argument from me on Trinity's schedule.
