The Future of NCC Football

Featured Replies

As an outsider it seems to me that the pipeline of football players is getting thinner.

Am I correct? Is this a concern?

Hey, They lost the first two games to 6A teams! NC is fine. Good for them for the schedule. Hard work at the beginning and I'm sure I will be watching them in Bowling Green in December.

Don't misunderstand. I'm not talking about this year's team. I'm talking 2 to 3 years down the road. It seems like their numbers are going way down.

I think so too.

I'm sure Lawnboy can give some good information regarding this.

Then maybe we should save this discussion for 2 or 3 years down the road.:thumb:

This isn't mandatory when it comes to participation.:lol2:

NCC's enrollment has always fluctuated. Its just the way it is. I graduated in 98 with the smallest class in like 50 years, 4 years later my brothers class was the highest it had been in 20. Its been up ever since until the last couple years. It will go back up again im sure.

I'm sure Lawnboy can give some good information regarding this.

I don't know about that, I'm just an observer from the stands and don't know how many are on the jr. high team, but they have one hell of a head coach in '83 alum Jeff Brauley (played 4 years at Duke). I agree with Bench, it is a cyclical thing. I will say, for a program that averages about 40-45 players on its varsity team year after year making it to the State Finals 6 of the last 8 years says alot about the quality coaching and athletes up on the "hill". This years squad is in the process of "finding itself", especially with many new starters, and I truly believe Coach Wagner will have this team ready when it counts.

My take on it is NCC will be fine once they start playing 2A schools. Could easily be playing for another state championship in December.

I think many who follow football in NKY (and especially the fan bases for the two schools) have become so accustomed to NCC and Beechwood consistently being top 5 teams in NKY, that when they lose to a much bigger school it sets off some false red flags. I.E. this thread.

Does NCC have the influx of talent that will allow them to be top five in NKY year in and year out, as they were able to do for a while? I doubt it. Does that mean the program is somehow in some trouble, not even close.

Agreed. NCC will be fine, but it's not like they're going to be on the same level as they were in 2005-2012 in the coming future. I just think there's going to be a significant drop off in the number of legitimate athletes they have there. This year's team is OK. They have a lot of concerns, but two glaring features that makes them different from those NCC teams between '05-'12? They have almost no Offensive Line, and there are major questions about the defense. That's where you guys should be looking for concern. They don't have any Jake Giesler's, Jack Gruenschlaeger's, Zack Kiernan's, Jake Smith's, Chris Kelly's, people of that talent level that they've on D and on the Line for those years.. In the forseeable future (right now at NCC 9-12), I see no players capable of such, so yeah it is kind of concerning.

I think most private schools have dry spells now and then. Cyclical is the perfect word to describe it, Lawnboy. Newcath may be headed into a dry cycle, but they are coming off a 2A title and have lost two close games to nice teams. However, Newcath has always competed well against bigger schools, so I don't necessarily buy the 5A/6A vs 2A scenario when it comes to them. If it were Lloyd or Newport, I would buy it. Newcath is annually a top 5 power, so it never shocked me when they's beat someone bigger than them. Truth be told, I expected them to beat Campbell and Cooper, but they're just not there yet. They'll probably start 1-4, but that's okay. Dan and his staff will coach them up and have them ready for November.

Nicely put Miller. Your post is right on target.

NewCath will be fine. They play as many big schools as possible to get better yes they want to win these games but it is more important to the Breds staff to improve every week to be best prepared when district starts. Some years they can beat these bigger schools some years they cant but either way they don't care about their record they care about how they are playing when it really counts. Don't get over worried about losing a few games early.
